Old Electron Microscope Stage

in #science5 years ago (edited)

Stage from an old Philip's EM 300 or 301, interchangeable from what I know. The two large cylinders protruding from top and bottom are the specimen exchange airlock/goniometer and the "ear" for the left hand translator, respectively. The right hand translator interfaces with the mechanisms in the airlock. It's a complicated bugger, and I have rebuilt a few. If you imagine your eyes are the gun you are looking down the way the electron beam would travel. With the EM300 and 301 there was Mechanical alignment of the lenses. The goniometer on the EM400, 410, 430, CM10,12, 20 and 30 were all very similar up until the creation of the computer controlled compustage which I think was in the 90s. I pulled this out a few days ago looking for something else in the warehouse. This thing is in immaculate condition. When I buy I house I want to put an EM301 column in it, and make a new control/ vacuum system. The scope can get 3 Angstrom resolution. #electronoptics #science #electronmicrosope #tem #philips

What does the "ear" do exactly?

It just gas a gear system in it that engages the specimen rod.
