Second Rock Edict of Asoka [Closed Shot]
Second Rock Edict of Ashoka - Public Health System (Third Century BCE)
Apart from the Indus towns, a well planned "Public Health System" developed in ancient India as early as third century BCE. The second rock edict of Girnar (a place in Gujarat) by the great "Maurya Emperor Ashoka" (3d Century BCE) written in "Pali" language with "Brahmi" script, clearly states that the Monarch had constructed various health centres along the main highways for the treatment of both men and animals and fruit as well as medical plants had been planted for the use in treatment and care. The Emperor has also arranged to dig wells for the supply of drinking water to the general public.
