An antibiotic in the soil kills the deadly bacteria

in #science7 years ago

Scientists at the Rockefeller University in New York have discovered a new family of antibiotics in finger samples. Natural compounds can be used against resistant bacteria.

The compounds, called malatsidini, treat several bacterial diseases have become resistant to existing drugs, including superbug MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). Finding them gives great hope to doctors.

Drug-resistant bacteria are one of the biggest problems for global healthcare. They take the lives of about 700,000 people a year. Therefore, new remedies are urgently needed.

There are millions of different microorganisms in the soil. Many of them produce compounds with therapeutic potential, including the new antibiotics.

Rockefeller University researchers have used genetic sequencing methods to analyze more than 1,000 soil samples taken in the United States. Many of them had malicidins. Scientists tested the compound on rats with MPSA and found it destroys the infection in skin wounds.

Scientists continue their work on new antibiotics to improve their effectiveness. Their hope is to switch to clinical trials and antibiotics to be approved for human use.
