Scientists have developed an intestine which was made using an organ-chip, this landmark achievement has been applauded by some many, the intestine in simple terms is a replica of the human intestine. This landmark achievement has created a higher potential towards the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.
Polymer was the main material that was used in the development of the Intestine-Chip.
The chip features tiny channels that can be lined with
thousands of living human cells, this has paved way for doctors to carry out test on several drug options on the chip, without the need of putting patients in drug treatments that may be cost effective.
The chip consist of a storage system which stores the stem cell of patients, the chip can also be used to test the effectiveness of drugs.
The development of this chip represents the combination engineering and biology which has enabled the recreation of intestinal lining that matches the patient particular intestinal disease without the need of carrying out surgery to ascertain the patients tissue sample.
According Clive Svendsen, from the Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors Regenerative Medicine Institute, "We can produce an unlimited number of copies of this tissue and use them to evaluate potential therapies. This is an important advance in personalised medicine," he added. The team had a collaboration with Emulate, a US-based biotech start-up.
