RE: Live from CERN - no more clouds in the LHC tunnel

in #science7 years ago

This is educational, and I upvote anything that I can learn from. CERN is a fascinating place. I live about 10 km away, therefore, I am hoping that all the talk about the possibility of creating a black hole from the site is false!!

Sort:

Where are you living exactly? (I know a bit this area for having lived there for 2 years).

Concerning the black hole stuff, one must be careful with the interpretations. Let me try to explain what I mean:

  • There are theories that predict that the LHC at CERN can create black holes. The same theories also predict that these black holes will evaporate very quickly.
  • These theories have not been verified experimentally (so far).
  • If you take a theory to be plausible, you need to take it fully: the Earth will not be destroyed as the black hole will evaporate before doing anything else.

I hope this clarifies :)

I am over by Bernex. I used to work in Satigny just beside the CERN. Thanks for the clarification on Black Holes. I find it fascinating. I have been trying to get a visit to the Hadron Collider for years but when they open it up for a day, tickets are gone faster than a Justin Bieber concert.

Okay I see very well ;)

Note that the LHC will undergo a long shutdown at the end of the next year. maybe will you be luckier this time (maybe could we try to organize a steemit private visit? :) )

I have a hard enough time getting a public visit. I can't see much chance of getting any kind of private visit. Nice idea though.

Well, it depends whether you know someone from the inside ;)

In that case, Count me IN!

We will see in due time, in probably two years from now (by the time the machine is warmed up and made accessible). But I can definitely organize this.
