Just came across this today, very creepy yet amazing. From what I read, it isn't uncommon for monks to perform self-mummification, but there has been no previous encounter like this.
The process takes weeks of not eating and only drinking water. Eventually, they enter a trance and died.
"It was not uncommon for monks to practice self-mummification but to find a mummified monk inside a statue is really extraordinary," said Wilfrid Rosendahl, a German paleontologist
"Using a CAT scan, we saw that there was a perfectly preserved body with skin and muscles inside the statue. It's a complete mummy, not just a skeleton. He was aged between 30 and 50."

No way. How it could be possible?? I mean it is possible that's why he was in there. But how could he do that??? :D
They weren't expecting it and just happened to find it out.
Oh Kay.
In fact the process of self-mummification was a very long and painful process that took 3000 days.
In the first 1000 days the monks would eat only local nuts and seeds which reduces their body weight severely.
In the second 1000 days the monks would only eat tree bark and roots which drained lots of water from their bodies. During the end of this phase they would drink poisonous tea made from urushi tree. It is assumed that the intent was to make their body too poisonous to be eaten by maggots.
The last phase is the actual mummification phase in which the monks will be locked in a crypt and meditate. Their only connection to the outer world was an air pipe and a bell which was rung every day.
The day the bell was not rung anymore, the pipe was removed and the crypt was sealed until the end of the last 1000 days.
Usually the bodies already started decaying by then, mummification was a mere exception which was seen as the proof that the monk has become a true Buddha and found their way to Nirvana. Though not being mummified the monks were honored and worshipped for their discipline and sacrifice.

Ouch
In-fuckin'-deed D-:
Edit: Just corrected some autocorrection mistakes. The part where " the monkey has become a true Buddha" made me giggle a bit. ;)

Huh wow. How many weeks would that take?
I think about 3 weeks they would starve themselves.
that's kinda incredible. i wonder what made them think to look there.
As a practitioner of self inquiry meditation this is pretty interesting. . .it takes a very long time to train oneself to be able to accomplish something like this. . essentially you have to bring the mind to a thought-free state for a very long time. . Separation of spirit and body. Very cool.
Make sure you eat though.
In the movie Boxers Omen a mummified monk comes back to life and kicks ass
Wow, this is really amazing. Thanks for posting!
Wow I'm crazy Impressed!
Why did anyone look in side the statue....?? That's what's got me confused.. Wii would just randomly cat scan a Buddha statue??
Seems like fake news to me..
That is incredible, imagine their faces when this popped up on the screen during the CAT scan... 😲
