So basically the idea is that you need to be able to kill the mouse as quickly and as humanly as possible if the experiment went wrong and the mouse is in even more pain? Sounds very unpleasant to be honest, even if it is necessary. I had no idea that the proper killing technique was taught as well.

Yeah, that's the gist. If you fuck up your are legally required to kill the animal as fast and painless as possible, even if it fucks up your experiment.
That is even more incentive to make sure that you don't mess up the experiment though. This makes me glad that as an astronomer I don't have to deal with things like this personally. Kudos to you.
I can imagine that killing a planet if your experiment goes wrong would be tricky
