Laniakea Supercluster is the galaxy supercluster that is home to the Milky Way and approximately 100,000 other nearby galaxies and spans nearly a half-billion light years. Laniakea’s discovery emerged from measurements of galactic positions and velocities that reveal how galaxies are moving in relation to concentrations of nearby matter and the universe’s overall expansion.
The scientists responsible for the new 3D map suggest that the newfound Laniakea supercluster of galaxies may even be part of a still-larger structure they have not fully defined yet.
Laniakea is Hawaiian word for "immeasurable heaven"
And 'nearby' is very relative.... Great image.
