This fish is only found in the Galapagos Islands. The red lipped batfish is found at depths of 30 meters or more they are often not easy to find. Although classified as a fish this little beauty finds it difficult to swim and uses it's pectoral fins to walk along the ocean floor! Their Costa Rican counterparts are the Rosy-lipped batfish near the Cocos Islands.
Their lipstick-like mouth sets it apart from other species and it is thought this feature supports recognition during spawning. They have what looks like a strange protrusion or horn on the head and it is thought to be used as a lure but scientists are not sure how yet!
Can you believe these are carnivorous fish and feed on large amounts of crabs, small fish, mollusks and shrimp.
Here is a video for the Red Lipped Batfish in action!
