My Biologist's Adventure #30 | Edhazardia Aedis, a parasite that kill mosquitoes !

What is Edhazardia Aedis

Edhazardia Aedis or E. Aedis is a parasite that specializes to infects Aedes Aegypti, for your information Aedes aegypti is a mosquito or known as the yellow fever mosquito. It is a mosquito that can spread disease like Chikungunya, Zika Fever, Dengue Fever and the also the others type of dangerous diseases. Aedes Aegypti is originated in Africa, and now we can found this mosquito at all around the world in the tropical and subtropical region. Several tropical fevers will be transmitted by this mosquito, that's why this mosquito(Aedes Aegypti) known as a vector. As a vector, they will transmit the disease from them to humans. The females mosquito will mature her egg after they bite for blood. The chemical compound like ammonia, carbon dioxide, lactic acid, and octanol, this is the chemical compound that emitted by mammals and this chemical compound will attract the mosquito to make the mammals as their host.

There are two methods on how the E. aedis spread through mosquito population, one of them is the E. aedis will proliferate in the mosquito's body, it will overwhelm the mosquito body, then the host will die. Another method is, there will be the female mosquito that infected by the parasite but they can survive however their mosquito babies will inherit the E. Aedes from their moms. will be inherited to the mosquito babies although their moms were not infected. Vavria Culicis is a competing species, sometimes this parasite( E. Aedis) can run into them. For your information, V. culicis also a microsporidian but it is not same as E. aedis, V. culisis can infect many different species of mosquito and V.culisis has the same modus operandi as E. aedis, V. culisis also a mosquito killer. When the host is defeat by the parasite, the parasite then will release their spores. Both parasite, E. Aedis, and V. culisis usually infected the mosquito larva that has less access to food and nutrient and this will result in the larva to die earlier.Spore will release by the death mosquito and this situation will allow the parasite to infect more mosquito larvae. By keeping their host alive more longer, there will be more spores for the parasite. So, it is not effective is killing their host too early. Co-infections starts to manifesting the host even before the host death. It still unknown how these two parasites duke it out in the mosquito or why the E. Aedis has a competitive edge over the V. culisis.

Where did Aedes Aegypti breed?

Stagnant water is the most liked place by the Aedes Aegypti to breed, the place that has stagnant water such as bucket, tires, and bottles. They also love to breed in the idle toilet tanks and also at the wet shower floor. For your information, the female mosquitoes laying their egg is stimulated by a chemical, a chemical that brings up by the bacteria. The female mosquitoes will lay their egg wisely, they have been motivated to lay the egg in the water that contains the correct amount of fatty acids, bacteria, and the others organic materials in the water.

How to prevent the disease

  • Where long trousers and a long-sleeve shirt when you do outdoor activities.
  • At night, use the mosquito net and treat the mosquito net with insecticide permethrin.
  • Using insect repellent that containing DEET and P-Menthane-3-8-diol, this types of insect repellent is more effective to the Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes.
  • Mosquito control like fogging for adult mosquito control and pesticide spraying for the larval control
