There is a medical condition called anencephaly where a child is born without brain or skull.

These are the photographs taken by me during my posting on the maternity ward.

WHAT IS ANENCEPHALY?

It is a developmental anomaly that occurs during embryonic development between 23rd to 26th day. It results in the birth of a child without brain, brain vault and scalp.

CAUSES

The main important cause is inadequate intake of folic acid during the 1st trimester of pregnancy. most important folic acid is given prior to the conception. It is recommended that all women of reproductive group consume 0.4 mg of folic acid daily.
In recent studies, it is believed that these are some association with deficiencies of the transcription factor TEAD2.
It occurs when the head part of the neural tube fails to close.

DIAGNOSIS

It is diagnosed by proper evaluation through ultrasound imagining.
The maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP screening) is also a very helpful parameter.

DOES THE CHILD SURVIVE ?

There is no sure treatment for this. It ultimately results in death.
The fetus dies within a few hours or days after birth from cardiorespiratory arrest.
