This is a great topic! Hacking home appliances and security systems requires a different set of skills and tools. It is not necessarily difficult, just different than what most of the hacking and research community traditionally focused on. That trend is shifting rapidly however, with billions of IoT device coming to market, a tremendous amount of attention is moving to test the security of these devices, starting with transportation and industrial controls. For now, most of the compromises are on the software interfaces. The apps for example you have installed on your phone to monitor or control those home devices are much easier to compromise. The overall reputation for IoT security is less than stellar, so be selective when you choose a product. This is a deep topic and I will definitely post a separate blog with some industry data.
