Twenty One Trees

I have always felt close to nature and spent time camping in the forest as a kid. Back at home I rode my bike around the neighborhood, and in the far east side was this area with two long row of tall tall trees you could walk through. Eventually when the neighborhood expaded that direction, most of it was cut down (although there is still a small path there now, it is not the same. Ever since I have wanted to plant a forest of trees to replace it.

While browsing flights I noticed that we can compare the expected CO2 emissions, 164kg + 66kg flying there and 80kg + 142kg of C02 flying back, on this particular trip.

To offset the carbon emissions I would need to plant enough trees to sequester 452 kg of CO2. My friend in the UK has suggested that bio-char might be another method, but there are many reasons I want to plant trees.

Calculate by dividing this amount by the CSR of a mature tree,
452 kg CO2 / 21.77 kg CO2 per year = 20.77 trees

Therefore 21 Trees at maturity will offset about 21kg of CO2, which could take up to 40 years in the case of a Douglas Fir tree, but as little as 5 years if a White Pine tree.
