They use peanut clippings or straw here for the animals to eat/sleep on. I think it smells sort of like pea when they have been harvested. Our neighbour had the same sort of problem only his chickens flew over the fence and into the wilds on the other side. Really dangerous for the chickens. So he put peanut clippings in the nesting boxes. Problem solved. I guess the chickens like the odd peanut that was left in the clippings or the taste of the leaves...
