Self & Society and the story of both

The very moment you are born into a culture and you inherit a language: With that language you have inherited 2500 years of thinking and interpretation and story. It's with these that we learn how to feel about things which with which we encounter and attend to and it comes with rationalizations ready to justify those feelings.

It is the task of the child to encounter the stories and appropriate the "right stories" to become socialized in the appropriate way. members of every society have to learn those stories in the context of who they are male or female gay or straight a minority or a majority member up to the time we come to actually question the stories we are told.

Story becomes even more important to differentiate us first in our teen years, to help us describe who we are, help us answer that one important question! It is after our deepest moments and sometimes depressions, that every comes to question these things as a matter of human integrity or find those authentic existential feelings.

It is the beginning of a long journey to be coming something "more than what was given": a creative intentional life of one's own which participates in changing the world for the better!

When we look back at our story and find that we invent our own story.... we include only that part of the world we remember feeling something significant -always as feeling first and we seek to justify it with rationalizations and heroics. It's only later that we come to realize that our thoughts should compose more of our character, our conduct and our beliefs. Peeling away from the story your given is the first task of telling your own story.

At its most honest, attempts to lead a life of philosophical humility and openness, will constantly put us in confrontation with society and it's orthodoxy. A constant aggravation over fixed institutions and the sheer disappointment characterizes the self and an irritation over the world as it can be.
