As much as we know that comparison isn't the healthy thing to do when it comes to life. However, it's human nature to compare things whether we are consciously of the fact or not.
For instance, in describing a pyramid to someone who hasn’t seen one before, you say its like a triangle.
Comparison is the tool that our minds use to make sense of things that our eyes are fully yet to grasp, so we can box it into our reality. comparison is a safety jacket that keeps our minds afloat.
However, though it helps us makes sense of things it gets counter-productive when we tailor our life in comparison to the live of another.
Everyone is guilty of this comparison at one point in their life.
We often compare to keep track of our progress, even the society has set standards of living that suggests success and we constantly check ourselves on this scale.
While in some circumstances it can be motivating and inspiring to do better, just like fire left uncontrolled, unchecked comparison would wreck havoc. Comparison could easily steal ones happiness
It easy to just tell you to stop comparing but that would hardly serve any true usefulness unless backed up with some practical steps.
Especially, in today's world, with social media and how everything seems to be on full display for the world, it can be easy to compare yourself to others. But, you need to stop doing it in a negative way.
Sure, you may not be able to reach a goal as quickly as someone else or it may require more hard work, but that doesn’t mean that everything is impossible for you.
Everyone is on a different path, and there are people who are better or worse off than you.
How To Stop Comparing
- Understand why comparing yourself to others, is counter-productive, stop wasting your time with comparisons and focus on how to improve your life.
- Be motivated, not competitive, channel those emotions into motivation and use them as a source of inspiration. Instead of feeling jealous.
- Just be happy for others. Good things can happen for other people doesn’t make your life any less important.
- Take a break from social media. It’s a scam! Seriously, all you are just seeing carefully selected pieces of someone's life. Don’t let it get to you.
- Be confident. Fake it till you make it.
- Take control of your finances. Money is a leading cause of comparison. Its important to always live within your means and saving up not living from paycheck to paycheck, make a budget and stick with it.
- There is no such thing as the perfect life. No one is perfect.
- Live as intentional as possible.
Too many people live their lives without intentionality or thought, as a result, lives are lived as a reaction to the events around them. Find a quiet moment and meditate on who you are and who you want to be. You change your life with conscious effort, rather than just wasting time with comparison.
