One of the methods to make your site rank well is to gain backlinks to your site. Backlinks are like votes for your site and lead visitors and the search spiders to your pages to get indexed and ranked.
There are two types of backlink. Dofollow and Nofollow. When a search spider hits a Dofollow link it follows the destination of the link. So when a site carries a Dofollow link to your site the spider is sent to you. It then also passes on some link juice to you. A Nofollow link does the opposite really. It aknowledges your there but then also tells you spider not to visit and not to pass on any link juice.
Knowing this you would assume that Dofollow links are better to build than Nofollow links. And this is true to some extent but their is a huge BUT.
You see, Dofollow links by nature are hard to comeby because webmasters don't want to pass on link juice. They don't want to help what they consider as competitors. Google knows this so when it sees a site with a ton of Dofollow links it smells a big rat because it screams to them that these links are not natural or organic. Because Nofollow links are much easier to gain it doesn't throw up any red flags.
If your a webmaster you should be building natural backlinks, don't chase Dofollow links, you may think your helping your rank but your really just killing it. IF you are linking to a site then don't fear giving a Dofollow link because again you maybe damaging your rank. If you link to someone your saying this is a great article. You maybe giving away some link juice, but do you really give anything away when your then build some trust with Google? Don't fear giving Do follow links, providing you are linking to quality.

Right. It's important to build the trust (with Google or Bing, or whatever #search #engine).
To speak for myself, I've never been "afraid" to link to real High-quality sites. If they're REALLY Good, as Wikipedia is .. it is a sound thing to do!
I often will look up a website (to check it's authority & how many #backlinks it has, as well as its Age ). So I devote a certain AMT of Time to doing this; it's an important part of the process, I feel.
I use a tool called MKT SAMURAI to take a look at the Site's Age, Links, Authority etc.
If it's a Video (and I want to chk its TOTAL backlinks), I use a special tool for that.
Thanks for your post, @socialmadeeasy! I appreciated the simplified explanation of backlinks and their importance. While I do not have a website currently, I have in the past. I remain interested in learning about the background operations involved in web development.
