The Seven Day Beer Challenge #2: Snowflake Beer (雪花啤酒), the perfect drink for MIllenials!

Three posts in a day! I'm on fire. I'm gonna need some ICE.

Which is why today, I bring a beer I have never even seen before, let alone tasted: Snowflake beer.

I was perusing the Family Mart looking at all the familiar beers; Budweiser, Suntory, Asahi, Hoegaarden and so forth. Useless, nothing new and it was so cold today I didn't leave the house in time to visit the interesting beer store.

But just as I was giving up, this blue, minimalist can sat there inconspicuously, not trying to hide, but certainly not trying to make a fool of itself. I saw no brand or English lettering - unusual in the world of beer - and decided to dive in.

This is what I saw:

Well, highly unrecognizable indeed! But it turns out the brand 'Snow beer' is actually

THE BEST SELLING BEER IN THE WORLD...

Even though it's almost entirely sold in China

So, I visited the website on the back to see if I could get any info and I'm greeted with some classic Chinglish:

I had a think and decided that I did have at least 18 years old somewhere, so continued in. Nothing interesting, sorry to disappoint.

But I did note that they have a fairly wide range of products, each beer having a totally different style and colour theme, which is likely why it was so unrecognizable.

Different Snow beer ranged from 'Globe Trekker', 'Camouflage series' and simply 'Ireland'. Interesting.

Upon checking some reviews, I started getting concerned. Not only was this the cheapest beer in the store, at about 60p, but it got an average score of 1/5 on ratebeer.com and 2/5 on beeradvocate.com.

I opened it up anyway, seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, and took a swig. To me, it tasted suspiciously like TsingTao from yesterday. But my tongue is kinda braindead so here's what some reviews said:

Smell is mostly watery with a touch of barley and a bit of a perfume smell to it. Flavour follows, mostly water with barley grain sweetness, a bit of earthy weirdness to it. Thin mouthfeel, did I say this tasted watery before? Overall, a very poor beer that I suppose accomplishes the purpose if you want to drink something that isn't water but tastes like water

Appearance - pale straw yellow with minimal carbonation although it produced a reasonable white head
Smell - light citrus with the slightest hint of grains
Taste - light, bland with no hint of grains; again, a rather bland beer
Feel - light, watery - nothing to speak of

Light golden beer with no head. Watery and light body. You can find some hints of malts and maybe sweetness, but it´s hard to find any taste in here.

The highest review I could find said this:

My favorite beer. I wish I could find it in michigan. It’s a better bud light. Don’t let the haters hate

Well now I don't know what to believe.

Honestly it just comes across as a safe beer, the kind you would drink with your mates over some street food without actually paying attention to the fact that you're drinking. Watery is an apt description for THE BEST SELLING BEER IN THE WORLD.

Ok so now, my nominations. I am very curious as to the kind of beers found in Finland and Wales, so I'm going with @acidyo - I've seen Finland simulator, I have high expectations - and @elliotjgardner. Ok yes I am from the UK, but I ain't been there for more than like a week over the last 8 years so I'm practically a beer stranger. Help me out Elliot!

#sevendaybeerchallenge on this tag great competition is going on......

I would be willing to give a beer with that name a go 🤔

Picture myself going up to the bar trying to impress the ladies.... I'll take 2 snowflakes!

😂 Well, it’s cute.

Haha, I love my snowflakes cold and wet

It won't taste like cotton candy though (still expect the gastric juices smell and washing product taste)

I'll give this a try from tomorrow on, I can't promise the beer will be Finnish but I can promise I'll be trying some out that I've never tasted before which are about 95% of the ones accessible here as I don't like beer that much. :P

Just try to avoid Chinese beer and I'll be happy! =D

Every review is going to be you saying how gross everything tasted. Can’t wait.

Yes! With @acidyo joining my brilliant challenge is destined to go viral. Cheers snowflake!

I obviously did it for you

This would be wonderful... Very easy infact, I don't drink beer so it's easy to get brands I've never tasted. It just wouldn't be that easy if it were a wine competition cos that's what I drink mostly.

Then you're next =P
