Something you may want to look at is @SteemBasicIncome. You transfer 1 Steem to Steem basic Income and in the memo you put the name of one friend using the @ sign before their name. Then you each get a lifetime vote. It is small right now, with the price of Steem so low, but it will be bigger in the future. It is not anything you are doing wrong. You can not do it from esteem on your phone. I have to go to my PC and use Steemit to transfer Steem.
