Jack didn’t hesitate to tell it all. Trip listened raptly to every detail, and seemed genuinely terrified of what he was hearing. But not surprised.
“What, been expecting the world to fall apart for awhile now, huh?” Came Barbara from behind Jack’s left arm. Jack had all but forgotten her presence while he told their tale, she had been so quiet, and speaking now seemed almost furious.
“Not a surprise to you that this is all happening is it tough guy? What the HELL?!” She couldn’t help herself, the stress of the day had been too great for her to handle. But Trip, far from being offended, only smiled right at her, as wide as he could.
“Been thinkin’ something might go down, yea. Guess I was right.”
While the two lovers gaped at Trip, awestruck by his seeming disinterest in the face of what surely must be impending doom, he merely continued jocundly along.
“Would you two mind talking with me awhile about something? There are somethings I think I could tell you that might make a little more sense of what’s going on. Follow me to my place?”
At once, as if by instinct, Jack insisted they not go over there. He really didn’t want Barb to see those pot plants, even in light of all this shit, he didn’t need that kind of trouble. But immediately Jack was overruled. Not by Trip as Jack might have expected, but by Barb herself.
“I want to hear what he has to say Jack, maybe he knows something. We should go.”
Resigned, Jack agreed, and the two followed Trip from their doorway and into his own.
“Hold on tight, kids.” Came Trips voice from the darkness, as he slid the dial by the side of his door from ‘away’ to ‘living room.’ Thankfully, Trip’s living room was pot free for the moment. instead, spread along the walls and floor were an array of newspaper clippings, articles and folders. Some of these looked ages old, decades maybe, and some looked new. The newer ones were of course only print out, the last newspaper stopped running almost forty years ago.
“What the hell is all of this, man?” Demanded Jack. “You gotta admit buddy, this looks pretty wacky, even for you.”
Trip laughed aloud wildly for a moment before responding cooly.
“I hear ya man, I know what it looks like. And it is pretty insane, don’t get me wrong. But hear me out, I’ve got something to tell you two that I think just might blow your minds.
And so Trip told them all he knew. He started where it all began, with his father and his father before him. They had lived in Massachusetts back in the 1990’s when all the talk of revolution had begun. Already the Company had begun to integrate itself into the lives of the people of America, and already the clear economical and personal benefits were being seen all throughout the country. However there were small bands of men and women, mostly in the eastern United States, who began to see this integration as not a benefit to society, but as a catalyst for the degeneration of humanity as they knew and loved it. Trip’s grandfather, according to him, was one of those men. It seemed that these men and women worked tirelessly to show the world the error of it’s ways, to save it from itself and from the company. As Trip reached this part of his speech, Barbara could hold her tongue no longer
“So you expect us to believe that those separatist bastards were the good guys all along? What are you, some dirty traitor!? Fuck you!”
At these words even Jack flinched, and he was only a bystander to this particular outburst of fury, but Trip remained as cool as ever.
“Hey I know it’s a lot to take it, but bear with me here, and I’ll explain to you what’s going on.”
