"Oligarchy and water were not a good combination" - by oscarschack

in #shortstory7 years ago (edited)

I woke up to the sound of a fish swimming into my window. I opened my eyes, looked at my watch and jumped out of bed. I walked to the kitchen, and poured a glass of synthetic milk up. I liked the taste of it, but the few who had tried to live above water said it tasted like water with calcium. I had lived under water since my birth.
I had always wanted to see it, the world above. I had imagined the life on land and how amazing it would be to be able to move, and to explore the world. The few, as we called the ones who have lived above water, once told me that it was an amazing place, but the climate change changed it forever. People did not care about the earth and did not listen to the scientist, which lead the rising sea levels, more natural calamity, and drought. The scientists then started to experiment with cities under water, and here we are, in a dome underwater forever stocked.

The city I lived in was split up in five domes. The biggest dome was the centre where all the big buildings, the leadership and shops were and where people from other domes met. The other four domes were domes where people lived, where they had their daily life. I lived in the eastern dome. The dome had everything you needed to live: a school, a mall, a rendezvous and a doctor, and all the people who worked there were people from the dome. It was like a local community where everybody knew everybody.
Even though we had everything we needed, it was like something was missing. It was rumoured that many tried to escape this closed environment. We were all longing the same thing, a thing most of us had never tried, and will never try, the privilege of travelling, exploring and to get enlightened. We were all locked in this hole, and do not get me wrong I loved my life here I was just looking for something better and more exciting.

People tried to make opposition, but the leadership's grip was too tight. They tried to control what we did and thought. People accepted it in the start, because the leadership had a plan, they knew how to make this underwater experiment work, and many even saw them as some kind of Gods, but as time went people got enough. They wanted to get influence on their own lives. They wanted to make the society more democratic. So, people met. They met to make a plan, because they thought they knew how this underwater experiment should work.

The centre dome was the place where people met, and the place where I met with a lot of my friends and the resistance movement. The dome had a lot of parks which became the gathering point for us. The government, as they called themselves, even though they were more like a bunch of jerks who sat on all the recourse and knowledge, tried several times, to stop our meetings. They even one day sent troops in to remove us, for our own best as they said, but they could not fool us.
We started some campaigns, to make the citizen aware of how controlled they were, and how much they had been fooled, but people did not listen or they could not listen, because our message never got to them. So, we had to act. We had to do something different, something they could not be silenced, something that would hit them hard.

One day we met in the park around the central tower, where the leadership was located, the security was heavy, but we had not expected anything else. We sat us by some bench, to wait for the sign. It took some time but suddenly most of the soldiers ran away to the edge of the dome. The other people in the park looked a bit surprised, but not us, because we knew was what about to happen. It was a diversion planned by us. Now we were in majority, so it was our time to act. The resistance movement surrounded the soldiers, while I ran into the tower via the emergency exit. There were soldiers inside the building as well but I sneaked around them without they even noticed me. In my bag, I had explosive material, so I just needed to place it, start the countdown and run. I ran as quickly as I could out of the building. As a ran out of the building the other people followed me, most of them survived, but some of them got shot by the soldiers just before the tower exploded, but freedom would not come without sacrifices and we knew that.

We believed that this strike would solve all the problems, with the target eliminated we believed a new era could start, an era of liberty, equality and fraternity.
