Altered Carbon Ep 1 Review

in #shows7 years ago (edited)

I love science fiction. Let me start there. Because I love it so much, I'm hard on it; it's a tough love.

But try as I might, I can't find many flaws in episode one of Altered Carbon on Netflix. Netflix is known for its quality in house programming, but science fiction is a special thing. Fraught with trope traps that are easy to fall into, and often making the mistake of building a eye-candy-rich world with no substance or substantive characters to fill it. In Altered Carbon's case, it sort of feels like we're having it all: rich story, interesting characters, and eye-popping visuals.

The main character is just as new to the world as we are, navigating the dystopian consequences of a war he lost, a war he is the sole survivor of. In this new world a piece of technology called the "stack" is humanity's key to immortality. Bodies are a dime a dozen, referred to simply as "sleeves".

Our main hero is revived 250 years after the lost war, to find that his enemies have consolidated power. The social classes are all but complete separate, with the elite living literally in the heavens in a place called The Atrium.

This one is not to be missed folks. It's a rare case where a show delivers on the awesomeness of it's premise. I hope they keep it up.

I completely agree with you! I haven’t watched a lot of sci-fi myself, but this is definitely the most beautiful one I’ve seen. It’s thought-provoking, filled with intriguing characters and a story line that’s difficult to predict. And it’s just gorgeous!! I’m looking forward to the rest of season 1. I think Netflix might have a hit on their hands with this one.

Most def. We'll be watching the rest, soon!

One of the best Sci-fi shows over the past 5-10 years. It only gets better as time goes on and the story unfolds. Acting is great, sets are great, and the story is awesome and thought provoking. I really wished they could have continued with the series by expanding on the world it's set in.

Yeah, that's one of the issues with television science fiction. In the books they can go into as much detail as they like, but onscreen you have to be kick more careful about where you spend time. However, assuming it gets a season two (and I'm pretty sure it will) we should be getting to know that world a lie better soon.

I will definitly watch this out . I don't like sci fiction movies or dramas. But after reading your amazing review i will definitly watch this out.

You should definitely give it a look. It's really good.
