Questions of human existence, from our brains to our bots
The theme for our July monthly magazine is about as serious as it gets: the very future of humanity. This week's installments in Future Human zoom in on flesh and blood, taking a look at the future of our synapses, our libido, and our high-tech augmentations. Oh! And stories on a global movement calling for human extinction and on potential pandemics, too.
But don't worry: comedy and whimsy lie beneath these dark theses. The buzziest story in Future Human this week made readers facepalm all across the internet. After being paid an absurd sum to give a speech on a private island, media theorist Douglas Rushkoff recounted his experience of getting up close and personal with a cabal of billionaires scheming to ensure their own survival when catastrophe strikes the rest of us. "The response to Rushkoff’s piece on Twitter was loud and seemed to echo a broader theme of distrust toward the ultra-wealthy and tech elite," our social media editor Nate Goldman notes. "Many already suspected that billionaires didn’t have their best interest at heart—and this was the proof they needed to vocalize their anger and dismay."
