Ladies and Gentlemen of Steemit, today let's talk about keeping you home or shelter protected against both the elements and the bad guys! There are a few realistic steps you can take to prevent your walls from being breached by the unknown!

So I will do the usual and make a list then explain why I believe it is a good fit! So let's get down to business! : )

Against The Bad Guys

Item 1

When defending your home against the typical bad guy; you may want to rig up a simple tripwire system around your house! This is very easily accomplished with the help of some nice thin fishing line and tin cans, bells or other noise making devices. Rig up your line and run the bell into your home. When the line moves, you'll know real fast! So this is just your run of the mill trip line like you see in the movies! But if it works why not use it?

Item 2

Barbed wire! Need I say more? Lol. You can actually make your own barbed wire if you are crafty enough! You could even be extra creative and throw some dollar store razor blades into your wire for those extra evasive enemies! Making your own barbed wire may be an advantage also. You can place the barbs closer together making it extra easy for my bad guy to get caught up in it!

Item 3

Booby traps- you can set up your own traps that are meant for attackers! Now this is something you have to be careful about and remember where you have them placed! And of course if you have friends and family with you...make sure they are also aware! A simple fix for this would be to draw out a map of where you have set your traps so that everyone can reference it before they go out! Booby traps are something I would not set up in the immediate area but around the outer perimeter of you property! This is just to prevent any unnecessary mishaps! But simple spring traps, bear traps and dead fall pits are something that could be realistically prepped for and accomplished in a quick manner!

Item 4

Guns and Ammo- Well I'm sure you all saw this one coming, but this is a self explanatory thing! Why not have not only the advantage of your home front? You should also have a little help defending it better! Firearms are a great way to deter any or all enemies that think they're going to get in your home and cause a ruckus.

Item 5

Rig you doors and windows up with a noise making device! At this point , you may not have power or batteries. So realistically we want to have a back up! So this is a good way to hear someone trying to get in if they make it past the mine field. Lol.

Item 6

Dogs- Now we all know that dogs don't live forever. This may be a good investment to make! Not only are they man's best friend, but I would also conside them a prep. Sounds funny calling a dog a prep, but in a reality they are a home security system all on their own! Dogs will alert you, protect you, deter unfriendlies and love you until the day they are sadly gone! Great to have for home defense!

Now this is not everything for bad guy defense, but it is a couple quick, realistic and inexpensive ways to defend your home if SHTF!

Against The Elements

Item 1

Tin roofing sheets in storage- Now the reason it would be good to have this; is to have a back up plan if your roof decides to go out on you from the weather! Now tin roofing is going to be a bit annoying when it rains, but at the same time it will last longer than the regular run of the mill roofing! I'm not saying go out and buy enough for three roofs worth of tin roofing, but just enough to do some patching if necessary! Unless you have the money then by all means go for it! : )

Item 2

Lumber- Extra wood will never hurt to have lying around! We all know there are so many possibilities for this item, but for this purpose I would use it to build a wall or extra layer for the roof. This could keep damaging rain and snow off you roof and give you a smaller perimeter to shovel out snow and keep a small are of you perimeter clear of snow! You could also use this to build awnings over you windows to deter the sun. This will keep more shade on your windows and reduce the heat coming into your home from sunlight! But wood is also a good thing to have to do repairs if anything becomes damaged!

Item 3

Rolls of plastic tarp- This is a great item to have for a few different reasons! You can use the tarp to insulate you windows in the winter time and keep more heat in your home! You can also use it to make a makeshift window if one breaks! I know we have all seen cars with that one plastic window on it! Lol. You can put a layer down on your rooftop to kind of waterproof your shingles or temporarily repair a leak. Don't just use it for your home, use it to cover crops during dust storms or snow if you are trying to grow all year round! You can even try to make a makeshift green house with the real clear plastic wrap! I would not go full scale wit the green house but sort of a mini one just to get some food growing in the winter time! But this can also be used to collect rainwater fro a drinking supply as well!

Item 4

Chicken wire- Rolls of chicken can be used to fortify your windows and prevent and possible flying debris from damaging your windows! You can also wrap the outer perimeter of your garden with it to keep out storm debris and of course those unwanted garden critters! You can also run it around the outside of your home to weave in tree boughs for extra winter and summer insulation. Obviously this would take some time and effort but it may help keep the heat in for winter and the heat out for the summer!

Item 5

Nails, screws and hardware- It never hurts to have extra hardware laying around for safe keeping! The possibilities here are unlimited, but this is a great prep to have! Most of the home improvements I have mentioned so far will require this item to begin with!

Item 6

Digging tools- Whether it be a farm tractor, excavator or just a regular old shovel; this is a great item to have! If you live in an area with a lot of rain or snow a trench would be a solid way to deter the water from your home! This is another thing that we would want to look back on the map and mark the trench out as well. If it is winter time and that trench fills with enough snow, we don;t want to have any accidents! Or even for night time purposes, this would be a good plan! But yes digging tools of some sort is a great thing to help prepare against the Elements!

So, these are just a few things that can help deter the bad people and the weather that may try to take your home from you! It is always a good thing to prep for these types of things! Someday we may not have unlimited access to items like these! If SHTF I'm sure we probably won't be able to go hit up the local Walmart to fill our carts with these useful items! But then again maybe others won;t think to take some of these items! But anyways; as always I appreciate hearing any additions you guys may have for this small list! I hope this was informative and enjoyable! Thank you for reading! : )

TEOTWAWKI Man

Sort:

Hand tools, not gas or electric, but the old fashioned kind. Very handy if crap drags out and the gas is gone and electricity out.

Very good addition sir! Thank you! : ) Hand tools are they way to go. Get back to the roots of things and do it the good ol' fashion way! Thanks again Bro!

Fortify Item 7 : Murder Box If you live in an apartment complex with a center hallway for an entrance, this can easily be used as a funnel point for anyone trying to enter. Just make sure you don't live on the ground floor.

If you are in a residential area, place cars to prevent foot and vehicle traffic from taking any other route than the one you want. Straight dead on into your line of site, in a single file line, is how you want people entering the street.

Cut down trees onto side roads from main roads to discourage vehicles from entering your area. If you have a bridge separating your area from another area, put barricades at both ends of the bridge. By the time they get through the first one, they'll be sitting ducks for everyone behind the second one.

Fortify Item 8: Residential Concealment If possible, due to people not seeing your house from other house or the road. Remove any items that point to a house (ie mailbox and street markers). Evenly put debris from the surrounding area to cover your road entrance. If possible, have small trees in pots that can be replanted on the driveway or with the right amount of foliage and weed coverage, look like they are planted. Best not give anyone a reason to go down the road expecting to find a stash.

Thank you as always @deanlogic. I am always waiting for your input! Great additions everytime! Thank you again sir!

After you funnel them in this will be waiting for them! Hahaha

That seems a little slow.

Haha. This would also be a good home defense investment. LOL. Maybe a couple of them just for good measure!

Or better yet, 300 Spartans manning these! LOL

@deanlogic EXCELLENT suggestions! Yes, create a funnel! NICE! Love your ideas!

Shows how lacking I am in many key areas :(
Mind you, UK authorities wouldn't like a few of those options ;)
We're not allowed to defend ourselves in the UK. We have to be willing to go to the slaughter ;)

That really sucks brother! I'm sorry, but the positive side to that is; In a world without law, the man can't regulate what you do anymore. : )

Ahh, so true my friend ;)

Great suggestions once again!
Plastic tarp is great if you have to have a containment area or to seal doorways and windows and vents in the event of biological or radiation contamination.

Tin roofs are excellent to help deter fires as well as the reasons mentioned above.

A board with nails sticking up out of it is a great deterrent inside window sills and in fenced areas to deter intruders from jumping a fence (should they get over that barbed wire or razor fencing.

I agree that dogs are excellent preps for the reasons you mentioned at home. Weighing the pros you mentioned vs the cons of sharing food/water or them barking at the wrong time giving away your position....they still come out ahead in my opinion.

I am almost caught up from when I was on vacation! YAY! lol!

Oily thank you as always. Also great additions! 😀 And yes you are almost there! I was just talking about you in my post yesterday and how you were trying to catch up. Lol. Just a few more to go. You got this! Haha

I saw where you mentioned me near the end of your vid. Lol! I finally accomplished catching up! Yay! Now I am catching up on your return comments. Haha!

I figured I'd leave you a special message when finally caught up. Lol. 😋

Lol! Well I haven't looked at your posts for today. ;)
