The Mountain Chicken 1 oz Silver Coin

A while back I was ordering some silver and I came across this frog coin. I have a 16 year old that loves frogs, and has a birthday, so I thought this would be the perfect gift!

The mountain chicken is a type of frog found only on the Caribbean islands of Montserrat & Dominica. It can reach up to 1 kg (2.2 lbs) and nearly 20 cm (8 in) in length! It is one of the largest frogs in the world and appears on the official seal of Dominica. (see above 😅)

It use to be a local delicacy but, due to overhunting & loss of habitat to both humans and a volcanic eruption, and a fungus, they are nearly extinct.

There are efforts to bring the mountain chicken population back up and I hope it they work!

The kid turns 17 in a couple weeks and I'll be happy to give this to him as part of his gift.

What's the other part, you may be asking yourself, or maybe not because it's not for you and you don't even know this kid xD

Well, I'm going to show you anyhow. Mostly because I just received it and have no one else to show until I give it to him. We watched a documentary recently on the invasion of cane toads that has been plaguing Australia for years, and is still spreading!

It's a classic (and terrible) real life story of idiot humans thinking they know how nature works and thinking they can control it.

Anyhow, without further ado, here is the main part of the gift I just received from Australia!

I am VERY excited to give him both of these gifts :D

I've eaten cane toad in the carribean. They're crazy big, my neices went crazy for them, we would search for them at night with flashlights.

Had to be a different toad you ate, cane's are not edible and not huge. Either way, bon appetie!!

Not sure what they were then, I thought that's what the restaurant called them. Anyway they came out after dark and we would take lights to go spot them. Tasted the same as the frog legs I ate in Tennessee.

I remember having frogs legs somewhere as a kid, they were fine but not meaty enough for a growing boy.

That’s some funny shit….. happy birthday🎁🎂

I'm sure he'll treasure the gifts.

That is a very interesting story of the frog. Never seen any frog grow that big here in my place.
cool silver you have there my friend, and also is that the real mummified cane toad?
!PIZZA !LUV

It is a real toad, yes xD

And even though it's dead and stuffed, it's weird to hold. Kid is going to love it though and that's what matters :)

That’s a cool one! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! Can't wait to give it to him!

I know someone who moved to Costa Rica, where the Cane Toad is a native species. She said they are poisonous to anything that licks it, as she learned when one of her dogs licked one, and was found later having seizures and half-dead in a creek nearby. Amazing that they're overrunning Australia now. 😬 Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to your kidlet! 😃

Indeed they are poisonous! Yes, they got to Australia from Central America, via Hawaii, in 1936. I guess there was a sugar cane conference somewhere in Central America in the late 20s or early 30s that was attended by A scientist from Australia where he learned about the toads helping kill the cane beetle locally, so that's where the idea started.

Turned out the cane beetle in Australia laid it's eggs in the flowering bud so they were two feet off the ground and the cane toads could not reach them. Tragic.
Here's the doc if you are interested...

17!

Ahhh I remember the good old days when you were always at the pool (making pancakes and cutting fruit) and 17 was know simply as “12”. 😂🤣

I hope the frog themed gifts are hits.

Thanks!!

He'll probably try and buy a soda with the fucking silver coin xD

Is your son @welshstacker?

I found nasty month-old leftover mac and cheese in the fridge.
It was a case of age-related macaroni degeneration.
