Wayne Gretzky Silver Round

It was Wayne Gretzky's birthday about a week ago and I wanted to post this round.

I got this round back in the Steem days. I saw @thedamus post about it so I contacted him about getting one. He told me he had gotten it from @dfinney, so I contacted her about getting one 🤣

I'm a big hockey fan and a big Gretzky fan. I lived in LA in the 80s and became an LA Kings fan after my first game in 1984. Wayne was traded to the LA Kings on August 9th, 1988 and quickly became known as, "The Trade". As you might expect, people in Canada were fuming. In fact, it upset some Canadians to the extent that New Democratic Party House Leader Nelson Riis demanded the government block it.

He played his last game in a New York Rangers jersey, unfortunately 😝

The final game of Gretzky's career was a 2–1 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 18, 1999, in Madison Square Garden. Although the game involved two American teams, both national anthems were played, with the lyrics slightly adjusted to accommodate Gretzky's departure. In place of the lyrics "O Canada, we stand on guard for thee", Bryan Adams ad-libbed, "We're going to miss you, Wayne Gretzky". "The Star-Spangled Banner", as sung by John Amirante, was altered to include the words "in the land of Wayne Gretzky".

Boy something like that would be an international incident these days 🤦‍♀

It's nice to bust this round out again though. Wayne has been in the hockey news quite a bit lately as another player, Alexander Ovechkin, is about to break what most folks thought of as an unbreakable record, most goals ever.

Sort:

I heard he might run for prime minister of Canada 🇨🇦

Trump pushing him to do so. I bet he’d win.

He's too smart to lower himself to politician status xD

This is like the cliff notes unsentimental version of this story. 😄😄

You may be shocked to find this out, but the story is not about you 🤣

It's about Wayne Gretzky.

"records were made to be broken." ~ I dunno who said that.

That is a cool round. Although I am not a big hickey watcher or fan, I did enjoy watching the occasional game with the KIngs playing just to watch Gretsky play. It will be interesting to see if the record can be broken.

Oh cool, I lived in LA when he was traded and was fortunate to see him live a few times! I do believe Ovechkin will break the record. I think he's only about 20 goals away now.
