A few days ago I shared one of the coins I picked up while I was travelling in Israel. I've always bought a few silver coins when I travel abroad, a habit I picked up from my Dad. Whenever we went someplace he would buy me a souvenir coin of some sort. One of my favorites was a silver token from Circus Circus Casino in Las Vegas, I still have it somewhere! It's a habit that has stuck with me over the years. While in Jerusalem I picked up a few coins in a coin shop. Since Israel hasn't really been around all that many years (as a country anyway) there weren't really "old" coins made in the Israel we know today. They did have some ancient coins that were way outside my budget but very, very awesome.
This is the second coin I picked up. I also picked up a third but it was an silver Egyptian coin that was older but a nice coin. Like I mentioned before the first coin I bought was supposedly 90% silver but turned out to be only 75%, on this second coin the owner was more honest. This one is only 50% silver, but I think the tarnishing on the coin kind of gave that one away. Have a look:
About the coin:
Country: Israel
Denomination: 100 Lirot
Year: 5740 (1979)
Mint: Jeruselem
Composition: Silver 50%
Weight: 20 grams
Diameter: 34 mm
Thickness: 3 mm
Edge: Smooth
Demonetized: Yes
Designer: Shlomo Rotem
Obverse: Denomination with emblem of state of Israel below, then Israel in Hebrew, Arabic, and English along with the date.
Reverse: Hanukkah lamp from Egypt inside Star of David. Inside the lamp lettering states (quoting directly from Numista because I can't read Hebrew) " "Because the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light". Underneath the words, in Hebrew "a Hanukkah lamp from Egypt, 19th century"."
end of quote!
While this coin is only 50% silver it's still a nice coin. I do prefer higher percentages usually! What really sold me on it was the tarnishing, just that cool purple glow. Kind of a unique looking coin in that regard. What is interesting is that both Israeli coins I bought are the same size and weight but this one was 100 Lirat and the first one was a 5 Lirat even though it had more silver, go figure... This is it on my coins made in Israel, not the fanciest coins I own but a nice momento of a great trip! As far as the stacking community goes probably not great for stacking as the premiums will be too high, more of a numismatic item.
Thanks for taking time to stop by and read my post. Please feel free to leave any questions or comments below.
And my disclaimer: Gold and silver stacking can be a fun hobby but isn't for everyone. You can lose money. I'm not a financial advisor and this isn't financial advice, please always do your own research before spending your hard earned money.

That is a very cool coin. You touched on what would be my fear about buying stuff from places abroad. Getting swindled on the actual silver content. I imagine there isn't an easy way to check for that before you buy?
No, this was before smart phones, these days you can check anything on a smart phone before you buy pretty much anywhere in the world. I don't think I've ever been swindled before abroad on coins, most coin shop owners are usually pretty honest in my experience.
Ah okay, that is cool. I guess that makes sense too. If that is their business they are hopefully pretty passionate and honest about it.
In reality, the content of harder metals is an advantage for circulating coins. Silver is soft and would scratch. Coins with higher base metals look better.
Yes that's very true, but these are commemorative coins not released for circulation. I'm not sure why they didn't keep the purity higher. Then again it was the seventies and they were are war a lot...
I am from a former communist country. Here, with a population of 15 million in the 1950s, a series of commemorative coins in the 500/1000 fineness range was minted. I do not know why. I guess quantity took precedence over quality.
Awesome that your Dad started you in coin collecting!😊
It’s an interesting hobby, and a good long term investment as well!
“No financial advice Lol!”🤣😇
Very nice 100 Lirot!🤗
Thanks! It's a great hobby!
It definitely is. My dad encouraged me as well, and I was fortunate that my best friends, dad was also a coin collector……
It gets you started early !😊
Now that I think about it, I don't have any coins from Israel.

I only have these two, they aren't real common to find here in the US.

Very cool look to this one, I agree. I am sure the picture doesn;t do it justice either as I know mine never do. So cool that your pops got you into collecting. My coin collecting mentor was my 7th grade science teacher who was also mentored our school coin club. He retired from teaching and started a coin shop in my home town. Sadly I read that he passed away a few months ago.
I'm not sure if this one's a scan or picture, it looks like it's one that was a picture. It's definitely more impressive in person! Many of my older coins I scanned or photographed for insurance but I didn't really keep track of which where which. Just all lumped into one folder now!
That's great that he got you going, to bad he passed away recently. At least he got to open his own coin shop. I would love to do that but it costs so much to do it!
I am not sure I would want to open a shop. I don't feel I am knowledgeable enough, plus I feel it would take the fun out of it.
I thought about it once, but just too much capital needed. Plus you're right, it's then a job and the fun does kind of get sucked out of it!
Interesting coin design!
Thanks! The designs from the middle east and Israel are pretty foreign to me so they're fun to collect a few anyway!
