This is my first post on Steemit. Few days back, one of my friend showed me this video:
And he said, "Hey! Did you see this post from Futurism? They claim to improve solar cell efficiency by 20%, Isn't that great?"
I checked it out and was skeptic on the matter because I felt like efficiency is not the term to toy around with. First, the solar cell are spinning thus power is consumed to rotate it, and half of the spinning panel is will be in shade and another is to improve a solar "cell" efficiency by 20% is a big deal. Silicon based solar cells are limited to efficiency of around 30% which is known as "Shockley–Queisser limit". So I could not believe this post since the post do not have convincing explanation and they have not included any reference with the post like papers, blogs with scientific and engineering explanation.
And today, I found this on Big think. I am also from the traditional educational system, but these days I am able to properly process information and know when to be skeptic on provided information. So I also agree that skepticism should also be taught to students in School. "What do you think?"
Welcome to Steemit. They actually say 20x more power generated. That's a bold claim. Maybe panels are less efficient in constant sun, but only part of this unit is getting full sun at any time. Like any new idea it has to be tested and verified.
Have fun here
Yes and another thing is spinning panel, power to spin is an input, will the output power generated overcome that and produce 20X power? I really don't wanna believe this at this point. And they are mentioning about heat accumulation, I am not so sure but I am having this question on my mind, " How inefficient a solar cell will be due to that reason? Dust accumulation could be a bigger problem than that, I guess.
