SketchCrazed – surreal, lurid, unzipped

in #sketchcrazed7 years ago (edited)

SketchCrazed is an opportunity for me to share the very strange drawings I do. The common thread is in the attempt to explore new relationships of form, contrast, and pattern, and to see where they take me.

Mushroom Trees

This drawing was influenced by a picture of trees. The basic structures of them are there, like the canopy, trunks and branching. But then I took it in its own direction pretty quickly, extrapolating additional shapes that were then tied into the composition.

Although I liked exploring the patterned areas, it seemed to want tonal areas in it, which can be hard to do with a black and white pen. I felt it would be good to see what it can be if I could use color and other patterning in it. Sometimes all the lines can feel too repetitive and complicate viewing.

Becoming a vector image

This shows how I drew the vector art and created the patterns that appear in things. Illustrator has a great tool that allows you to mask one thing into another. So all the lines that break out of the shapes are actually masked into the main shapes in the colored version. It can look like a mess in the keyline view.

Although the original ink drawing can stand on its own, I like what can be done when I re-create it in my vector program and add color values. It is not meant to be a faithful rendering of the original, but becomes its own image. So variations and interpretations of shapes is just part of developing it out.

This post is awesome. I love seeing hand drawn images move into vector images and the dynamic changes. I draw a lot and use illustrator but I never do things this complicated. This is inspiring me to take the next step with illustrator. Thank you! Following you :)

Thank you @budsnow. I appreciate your comments. You look like you have a very good handle on vector drawing. One thing I like about it is I can create shape-driven images instead of using outlines. I like the combination of both, but it just gives you more flexibility.

Hello! I find your post valuable for the art community! Thanks for the great post! ARTzone is now following you! ALWAYs follow @artzone and the artzone tag, and support our artists!

really great colours and process. I always enjoy how clean and clear final digital images look.

Thank you @openmindopen. I see lots of my drawings as templates for developing further like this one as the desire arises. It is really kind of liberating because the image is already there, I just need to re-render it and have fun with everything. I've done acrylic paintings from them as well, a much more lengthy process.

hmm oh that'd be a good one, digital to painting. haven't done that yet. worth a try for sure.

thanks@slothicorn! Appreciate it.

Yesssss I love it!! Can't go wrong with shrooms!

Absolutely! Thank you @kaykunoichi. They're probably growing in your yard.

Yes, they are :D

Wonderful graphic design. Very fresh looking. nice work.

Thank you @houseofcouchie. I really like creating the vector versions to see how they might work in color.
