You can use toners and retinol together, but it's crucial to choose the right toner to prevent irritation.
Opt for toners with hydrating and soothing ingredients, and those with antioxidants like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, chamomile, cucumber, or green tea, and I recommend choosing those that are fragrance-free and without drying alcohols.
Avoid toners with high percentages of exfoliating acids (AHAs like Glycolic, Lactic, Mandelic Acid, BHA like Salicylic Acid, and PHAs) as they can disrupt the skin barrier and then increase skin sensitivity to retinol, leading to more irritation and sensitivities. If you want to use exfoliating toners, then only use them on days when you are not using retinol.
