Hi everybody!
I come back with some of my step by step digital illustration process. You know that my Macbook pro late 2011 was broke with logic board damage and its come to life with a reflow but last week is come to dead again. Well for this post I used a old laptop: a mac book pro 2006 that has capacity to runs Adobe Illustrator CS5. So the digital artwork I am going to show you in this post was made with a lapto of almost 12 years of life (incredible, dont you think?). I hope to save money with this post on steemit in that way buy a new laptop and create more wonderful illustrations. I really appreciate all your support and inspiring comments.
Well, lets start.
- I made a sketch. This time the main character is a girl with strong expression face. This step is basic, rough lines and simple shapes.
- I not make always the same steps. This time first I applied a gradient color background to get inspiring about color harmony.
- Here I used flat colors into each part of character: one layer for skin, another one for hair, other for eyes and so on. It is just a reference colors.
- I pplied color gradient into sketch layer and also I used some shadows to whole illustration.
- I decided to use a black color on some part of contours of character and use some light on face, hand and arm. I added some shadows on hair.
- blending of shadows and face details.
- I realized that my composition was going all in on the same harmony color, I mean almost all the composition as a pink and purple tones so I decided to change the gradient color background to make huge contrast between it and character.
- More blending of shadows and face details. I added some light on hair.
- You know that I am not good making backgrounds. It is something that I would like to improve as a digital artist; how to make a wonderfull landscape. For this time I tried to make something different on my composition. The next process and steps are experimentals. In this step I added some clouds.
- After I was playing with some texture brush I saw the posibilities. Here I applied some stains to create a sense of environment.
- I use a tree brush and another details like star and birds on the sky. Also I decided to add a fashion tattoo on the character arm and well it is finally finish!.... I know that I could have done better but I promise to make it in the next digital step by step work, nevertheless it was a good digital practice and the final work was good!. What do you think? Do you like this artwork? Do you have some suggest for my next digital step by step post?
Here I am upload a .gif file that show the step by step the process work. I hope you like it.
Also, a picture of myself and my old mac book pro 2006. Do you belive that lapto has 12 years and its still Works!!!!!? Incredible!

Thank you for sharing the process shots. I'm an aspiring digital illustrator and process shots help me understand another artist's technique in the hopes that I could learn a bit and personalize the style for better outputs.
How do you choose the colors? Do you imagine the end result before you commit to finishing it or you just make out the image as you go along rendering it?
Well One of the most difficult aspect when I make a illustration is the color. As you see my technique is very experimental, I started this picture with gradient pink-purple background and I decided to change it some steps later. The select colors and how to use it into a digital art has a lot of topics and teorical aspects, so If you check my next posts of step by step drawing I am going to talk more about the selection of color and why I use some palete. Thanks to make this question, is really important! I will focus in this theme. Thanks to write me, I really apprecite it!
Thank you for your response. I hope you could expound on your process a bit further to help me become more proficient at color selection by learning from others. Good luck on that post and your art journey :D
Hi my friend! I have posted another step by step process. Take a look. I hope you like it and help you to improve as an digital artist.

Great digital art!
I sure can believe that Mac computers have long lifes. I bought an Imac in 2007, and it lasted for 10 years. Due to a lack of money I'm back with a Windows pc since oktober 2017 when my Imac broke down. But on that Imac I runned actually photoshop CC. Illustrator I don't use, but when I see what you create with Illustrator, I think it's time for me to start focus on something new ... called Illustrator!
Hi. Thank for your comment and feedback! :)
Well, my old laptop mac lasted more than my new one. In fact this model mac book pro late 2011 was renew the logic board in 2016 so this lated only 2 years and break down for the same reason "logic board issues". Maybe it has been done purposely to last this time and well this laptop are really expensive but on other aspect, it an incredible tools for work.
Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, both are interesting software to create digital art!

That is amazing what you can do with digital art. I'm afraid I'm still at the stage of jagged rough lines and filling in spaces. Thanks for sharing this for it lets me see that digital art can be a fine way to express your artistic abilities. I easpecially like the Gif showing your girl come to life! Excellent stuff!
Thanks to take time to write me! :) Well, the most important is keep working and not be afraid to makes some mistakes. When I started in this field my drawings were really roughs and uglies but with perseverance you will grow as an artist, you know, "practice makes perfect"
How true.
Thats really nice, though, you could work on some places but it's decent enough :)
Thank you! I hope to improve, this post will help me to grow and also show you my process as a digital art. :)
Oh wow- incredible what you've achieved with your old machine - and I was so glad to see the Curie on your post- hopefully that'll help a little way towards your new machine!
I love this drawing - especially the movement that you've captured in her hair (I must admit- I am craving her hair- it's beautiful!) and also love the glow on her face- it kind of hints at what she might be walking towards - perhaps a bonfire, or a house with glowing lights in front of her. Also- I think what you've done with the background is really effective.

Thank you to take time to write me and express so kindly your opinions about this artwork. Is not my best work, but I think with patience and perseverance I am going to grow. Is inspiring receive so many feedback here, that motivate me to still working and showing more of my step by step work. :)
Yes, my old laptop is a warrior, is incredible how it still works. I know that I am going to fix this laptop issue.
wow es hermosa, hiciste un gran trabajo.
Muchas gracias! :)
Beautiful work! 😊👍
Thank you!!! ;)
I love your artwork :) You have a talent!
Thank you! The talent is really important, but more than talent, the perseverance to reach a goal! Thanks to write me!
I really like seeing your process, and the gif makes it all so clear each layer!
Do you know that that computer can work forever? Today they have stopped making the computers to last, but before they used to make them, for example with the expandable ram slots where they could be upgraded. Now you cannot open them, just want you to buy a new one. Our culture must go back to fixing, not replacing, to reusing, not disposing.
Bendiciones Amigo!
Muchas gracias amigo mio!
Hello your digital art is pretty impressive. I love that you show every step of the process. The details of your art is amazing it is really beautiful
Thank you my friend! :) Keep checking my next work! I hope to surprise you soon.
Hey Abrahmatan,
Your art piece is really nice.
The nice features include the background. I love the sky, that even has birds flying in the space, with a mild ambience and showing some beat of trees. It's a beautiful natural display. The green colour has matched it perfectly.
I love the little girl's serious face. She is up to something as she folds Her arms and walks purposely.
Thank you so much! I am glad that you like it so much. I really appreciate your comment! :)

Really neat to see not the just progress, but also read your reasoning behind each step. I totally agree on the change to the color background. I also particularly like how you chose to give her a strong expression and her pose brings emphasis to her face. The art itself is really pleasant as well.
Thanks to write me! Well is not easy express myself in english, maybe in spanish I could felling more confortable to explain details in words of each step and step. I have posted a new post. Take a look. I hope you like it. :)
