🎨 Accessory in MDF for Laser Cut, Mechanical Model: SteamPunk Owl 🎨

in #slothicorn6 years ago (edited)
Hello friends, lovers of design !, I have come to bring you this time an owl design structured in 3 mm MDF material, which has its own characteristics steampunk style, since in it there are gears with mobility at their wings and eyes, this also holds an ornamented key, which can be detached from between its legs; This key can be attached to a rope or chain, likewise it can be free or in a separate collar as a whole.

Creative Process:

SteamPunk Owl, Superior Structure.

Like everything in life, every activity starts with an idea, it originates from a colleague, Yan Carlos Quiñones, which, motivated to the realization of an original and unique gift, shows a referential image of the idea that it possessed (Refrential Image # 1), in which I wanted to generate movement through a sequence of gears (previous idea to previous works done by my person in MDF), this leads to a consequent investigation of the form that was wished to represent and of what elements and proportions this elaboration would have.

Considering elements of the shape desired for the Owl, the structure of Referential Image # 2 is taken into account, where it is taken in resemblance of the basic form, to then include the desired graphic elements, in this case the gears that previously they had been designed; using for this a gear of 12 teeth for the structure of the eyes and one of 19 teeth to then be added to a winged structure hollowed (Referential image # 3).

Other visual elements were taken from Referential Image # 4, this served as a reference for the basic shape of the eyebrows, beak and claws.

Once the parameters of the desired size were established, the gear structure was placed together with the other structural elements on it (Referential Image # 5), thus beginning to have the desired form, giving a preview of the final result. Referential Image #5

Owl SteamPunk, Base Structure.

Owl SteamPunk, Base Structure. The base of this piece is fundamental since it fulfills the function of holding together the upper parts and being the support of the gears that will be the mechanical exercise of movement, for this the base that holds the upper pieces had to be structured (Referential Image # 6), including the hollow surface where the shaft for the moving parts of the gears (marked with green in Referential Image # 6) would be found, it is necessary to take into account the thickness of the shaft, since at the moment of generating the motricity , can not be neither oscillating nor very just, the oscillation would generate that the teeth of the gears would be superimposed on each other, whereas if it is adjusted, they would not be able to move.
Referential Image #6
The appearance of the structure has openings that follow the pattern of the desired shape. Except for the area where the Owl's legs would be, it maintains a symmetrical shape, which makes it visually more aesthetic.

The area where the lock would be lowered to the level between the wings and the tail, to make it more visible when expanding the wings. The similarity of the bolt was taken from Referential Image # 7.

The art has an external piece, a key, which can be extracted from between the claws, this is held with a moderate pressure. This key is the product of the union of the upper and lower part of 2 keys, to make it more ornamented (Referential Image # 8). The shape of the claws were taken from the model of the legs, to obtain a continuity of the upper structure. The claws were centered on the handle of the key, since among its waves it would obtain a firm position, more stable to the movement of the host. This key can be attached to a rope or chain, likewise it can be free or in a separate necklace as a whole which could be given as an external gift, as a sign of appreciation.

Assembly instructions:

Owl, Laser Cut Structure.

Engranes 64x64.png

Recommendations:

Engranes 24x24.pngMake sure you have all the cutting elements, since there are very small pieces.
Engranes 24x24.pngCheck the location of each of the pieces.
Engranes 24x24.pngBefore assembling, you can lubricate the tacks with a common candle (frute with the candle).

Materialss:

We will need the following for the realization of this piece:

The pieces cut in 3mm MDF.
Jewelery tweezers.
4 Jewelery tacks.
1 Medium ring.
2 Small rings.
1 Piece of string or rope.
Carpentry glue or some strong glue.
Brush or toothpick for glue.

Once the pieces of MDF laser cut is in our hands, we will take into account that they have a right and a reverse, the right is something burned by the laser, while the reverse is the natural color of the piece, we must also own a series of materials (which are described in the box on the left), these can be easily obtained in any jewelry store.

Step 1: we must place the mobile elements on the base, we can take into account the right and reverse side of the piece, in this case the base will be placed on the right side and the rest upside down, to generate a visual contrast, it is at the pleasure of Each one, once put the pieces, we will pass the jewelery tacks through the holes located in the center of the gears and then to its corresponding axis in the base. With the help of one of the jewelery clips, in the back part of the base we will make a doubles in the tacks, placing the tip inside one of the hollow panels of the base, so that this way it does not tear the skin or the clothes .

As the pieces are 3 millimeters deep, it is recommended to use studs 9 millimeters long, so that they can pass through the 2 pieces and then be folded. In the case that the studs are longer they can be cut once inside the shaft, so as not to have trouble with the burr.

Step 2: with the help of a brush or a toothpick, glue was placed on the top of the base and on the back of the pieces (eyebrows, beak, legs), for later placement.

Step 3: once the legs are fixed to the base, we will proceed to place the claws on them in the correct order and then place the key between them. Once the location of the pieces has been checked, we will place the glue on the base of the claws and on the surface of the legs. We can use the key as reference of placement, in this way it prevents the balancing, excessive adjustment or misalignment of the key.

Step 4: the rings are placed in the hollow grooves with the help of the jewelery clips, one medium in the upper part of the base (head), another in the lower part (Tail) and the last in the adornment of the key, the ring of the tail and the key we will join by a piece of chain or rope, everything depends on the pleasure of the person. It is also worth noting that the key can be free or in the same way as an additional piece of gift or as part of a game - set.

The cutting structure is the one on the right, consisting of 1 base, 2 eyebrows, 1 spout, 2 legs, 4 claws, 1 spanner, 2 gear of 12 teeth and 2 wings of 10 teeth (these wings have teeth unequal for their symmetry when placing them next to each other). The process of creation, structuring, extrusion, design, assembly and edition of both the parts and this document were made in the Corel DRAW X6 program.

Greetings to everyone who in one way or another found stimulation and inspiration in the knowledge provided in this presentation. I know it's simple, but at the same time the Steampunk Style Owl pendant has been well received by the public, as it is a striking, attractive, seductive, fun and especially de-stressing piece, since when performing the movement of the wings causes a feeling of pleasure.
My name is Yorvy Daniel Suárez Matheus, Venezuelan, and I like to create mechanical models using different types of gears or simple but colorful moving parts at the level of ornate Steampunk Style.

Thank you for having traveled the road with us.
