Most likely a good wind storm. Might want to check for any signs of health disease just to make sure. That looks like a pine of some sort who are notorious for diseases.
Yeah I thought it might be too (a good wind storm, seeing how thin and spindly the tree was). Am sure the caretakers of the palace would have looked into the matter, if it was diseased... But on the other hand, I do see new growth on the top, so it must be healthy.. :)

No idea! :) It's a conifer - could be a fir or a pine... I always mix them up!
