My failed attempt at this trick shot. Should I have given more focus on the supposedly smaller object? Any advice will be appreciated.

I think you should shoot at landscape mode if you're on smartphone. If on camera with manual controls, go aperture priority and set the highest value. In that way, no background blur will be applied.

If you're shooting on Mate 10, go aperture mode and set to highest value. no background blur.

edit: I tried it on my phone, go pro mode and go manual focus set focus to landscape mode
