The War of the Roses

in #smartphonephotography6 years ago (edited)

Today is #marketfriday which is a great place to post your local market photography from around the world. This very popular category on steemit is run by my good friend @dswigle who manages this ever growing group with great efficiency and panache.

First up we have a beautiful single Yellow Rose long associated with warmth and feelings of friendship and love.

I liked this signage and often think where would we be without good signs?

I'm not certain but I think these white flowers below are known as Ox-eye daisies in the UK. What are they called in other countries?

The Jasmine below always reminds me of my time in South Africa where we had this plant growing in the garden. The fragrance on a summers evening was intoxicating.

The red flowers below were striking with their vibrant colour but I didn't get the name of them. Just a riot of red.

The red and white Roses below have deep historical significance in England.

The red Rose was the emblem of the house of Lancashire and the white Rose was the emblem of the House of York.

These two branches of the same family (Plantagenet) were fighting civil wars with each other for over 30 years for the crown of England.

King Edward IV of the York family eventually won the war.

Hope you enjoyed these lovely flowers and the brief history lesson. :)

Sorry to contradict the teacher, but the first flower is a double begonia. Either apricot or creamsicle.

The plain red ones are a different type of begonia.

I actually think the white flowers are Osteospermum or the more common name of African Daisies. An Ox-Eye Daisy is something that we also have here, but, they are white petals with yellow centers.

The bottom red and white flowers are both double begonias. The telltale succulent looking stem is a dead giveaway. Unless they call these roses in the Mother Land.

Of course, there is room for error. I could be wrong.

Tip!

Thank you for participating in #MarketFriday and I absolutely love double begonias! They are one of my favorite.

I just pinched the emoji that you pinched 😊

Like the man in orthopedic shoes. I stand corrected to your superior botanical knowledge @dswigle
All I have to say is that they are beautiful by whatever name they have.

I'm just a snap happy chappie spreading the joys of nature.

Thanks for the tip and resteem Denise. You are a star.

Haha! I should have left you! Nobody would have noticed. The joy of nature is never lost on me. They are all beautiful.

You are welcome and itis always a pleasure.

His collection of photographs, about the flowers are great, here in my country, to the daisies, because it is the same name, white daisies, love your roses, they are beautiful. very good presentation.

Thank you for your warm comments. Interesting that the daisies have the same name.

I'm a poetic genius and didn't know it! lol nice bot

Beautiful selection of flowers @molometer. I wouldn't have thought of that for market friday. Great idea. 😊

A flower market is probably one of the oldest markets going. We had a lovely ancient one in Columbia Road Bethnal Green, London. It's still there today. 😊I just pinched your emoji saves me looking for one ha ha.

Seems only sensible to me @molometer. I've been known to pinch the odd emoji myself. 😁

Columbia Road, Bethnal Green is one of my favourite flower markets too.

O cool you've been there too. It's a great market for a wander. Always reminds me of Mary Poppins.

great shots for market Friday.. i went to the green house .. I should post those..I love flowers. Used my phone to take them too...resteemed:)

Go for it. I just watched a documentary about the flower business.
Most grown in greenhouses it is a $10 billion business!

I adore roses. I wish I had a yard full of them. I actually used to keep roses back when I could get into the garden and tend them myself. My husband does all the yard work now – our garden is where plants go to die. :( LOL

Tell me about it. I planted a Jasmine plant and it always looks half dead but flowers every year. The Orchids are my wife's plants. It's been alive for about 3 years and flowers every year. She has the green fingers lol.

Actually, my husband doesn’t have any trouble growing trees. And, trees give him lots of opportunities to practice his tree bondage. He has this thing about trees growing straight. So, he ties branches into place and binds the trunk to pegs to hold it in position.

Of course, I think that ruins something like a Crepe Myrtle. I also think it makes trees boring if they only grow straight. It’s the irregularities that make them interesting visually.

Tree bondage! sounds painful but what do I know ha ha. I like my trees eu natural too.

It is always lovely to see flowers!

Thanks @mariannewest can't beat a beautiful flower. A picture paints 1000 words, as they say.

That's magnificent to check out so beautiful this is amazing flowers you spotted there :)

Thank you @blazing they are stunning as is most of nature when we take the time to stop and look.
