Hall of Fame of Giant Slayers - World Cup 2018

There is a special place in the Hall of Fame of Giant Slayers for those who ever beat Germany. Other inductees include those who ever beat any of the juggernauts such as Brazil, Argentina, or Italy.

Mexico and South Korea are the latest inductees to it. Surprisingly, it is quite a long list. Granted, it spans over almost a 100 years. Austria and Algeria spring to mind among the former glorious Slayers, also Serbia and Denmark...

As for the Croats, even though they themselves aspire to be the Giants, the recent 3:0 win over Argentina lands them I believe onto the same list. Uruguay cemented its place on the list in 1950, while Hungary made the 1954 as unforgettable for them as it gets.

This World Cup still may produce at least one more inductee if Brazil is beaten by a second tier (historically, not factually) team, or if Argentina passes the French to subsequently be beaten by Croatia once again, or by Belgium or Portugal.

I personally cherish this Hall of Fame, because seeing all the same nations winning the World Cup over and over is really boring to say the least. It is also frustrating to see time and again a big nation muscle its way to the final often by suppressing smaller opponents just by a sheer authority rather than the quality of game.

This is a sacred chamber, this Hall of Fame, of warriors...
