Which Striker Will Lead Germany's World Cup Campaign?

in #soccer7 years ago

The battle for a spot in Germany’s squad for the Russia 2018 World Cup has heated up. Who should Joachim Low deploy as the central striker? Let us investigate who has the strongest claim...

#1 Timo Werner

Having scored seven goals and provided two assists in 10 games for Germany, Timo Werner has become one of the most feared strikers in the Bundesliga. His top-speed of 21.7 miles per hour, leaves defenders in the dust and is comfortably the quickest option in attack for Germany. Werner was part of the team that won the FIFA Confederations Cup winner in 2017 and picked up the Golden Ball for his troubles as well.

#2 Sandro Wagner

He self-proclaimed as Germany's best striker in an interview with the Bundesliga. Wagner earned a move to Munich having helped Hoffenheim qualify for the UEFA Champions League qualification rounds for the first time in the club’s history in 2016/17. The move is seen as a move to try and secure a place in Joachim Low's 23 man squad to Russia. He has scored a team best of 5 goals in the World Cup qualifying campaign.

#3 Mario Gomez

The incumbent no.9 for Germany before the emergence of new blood, Gomez has been putting in goals for Germany when Werner was only 11 years old. Since his debut for Germany in 2007, Gomez has 31 goals and 12 assists in 71 games. His move back to his former club Stuttgart signals his intent to Low that he is not done yet.

#4 Lars Stindl

A name that perhaps is the least recognised among the four, Lars Stindl is still a prolific striker. He missed out on the Golden all in last years Confederations Cup, having fewer assists than Timo Werner. In the past 18 months, he has banged in 15 goals and assisted 9 for Borussia Mönchengladbach, impressive because he occasionally starts in midfield with the likes of Raffael and Thorgan Hazard in front of him.

Honourable Mentions: Kevin Volland, Mark Uth, Nils Petersen

I think Timo Werner will be the best option. Most accurate for this season and a big contender to lead the line for Germany’s World Cup attacking.

Personally, I think so too. With either Wagner or Gomez as backup.
