The Italians managed to beat Liverpool 4-2 on the night at the Stadio Olimpico, but they left it late and it still was not enough to go through to their second ever Champions League Final.
Liverpool scored the opening goal inside the 9th minute after Senegalese star winger Sadio Mane tucked away Roberto Firmino's pass to put The Reds 0-1 ahead, but their lead lasted only 6 minutes after Roma had some luck on their side, which resulted in the equaliser after an unfortunate own-goal by James Milner.
In the 25th minute Liverpool re-gained their one goal lead after Netherland's international midfielder Gini Wijnaldum headed the ball into the net to make the scoreline 1-2 on the night for the Merseysiders.
Roma then got back into the match after Loris Karius partially saved Stephan El Shaarawy's shot, but the ball fell right into Edin Dzeko's feet and the Bosinian star striker made no mistake to make the scoreline 2-2.
Until the 86th minute Jurgen Klopp's side looked like they where going to go through comfortably, and they did not look like they were in any danger to get knocked out at any point over the 2 legs, but Radja Nainngolan put Roma ahead 4 minutes from the end of regular time, with a beautiful finish from outside the box.
Then Roma were gifted a penalty in stoppage time, after the referee for the night Damir Skomina bizarrely awarded them a penalty for a handball, when it was clear that Ragnar Klavan had his hands where they were supposed to be. Radja Nainngolan made no mistake, but it was too late as it was the final opportunity of the match, which meant the final scoreline was 4-2 for the night, with The Reds going through 7-6 on aggregate.
Jurgen Klopp's side are now through to their 8th final of Europe's top club competition as they face current holders Real Madrid on the 26th of May, something which looked like just a dream at the start of the season, after they had only qualified for their 2nd time in 9 seasons in this competition.
The two sides met once before in a European Cup final, which will be exactly 27 years and 1 day from this season's final, and interestingly that day Liverpool won the match 1-0, and they where also the last team to beat Real Madrid in a European Cup final.
