The end of freedom will not be by the hands of an evil dictator. Rather through pleasure and distraction: a willing surrender.
Lately, I have been thinking about how my attention is warred over. About the institutions whose entire existence depend upon dominating my thoughts, for the purpose of increasing revenue, promoting consumption, and encouraging distraction. I want to believe I’m an exception; that I am free thinking and aware. Well, the reality is I’m not-- at least not as much as I would like to be.
All the content I see, read and hear takes up mental real estate. I will think about everything I take in. And the more frequently I think about it, the more likely the values of the content will begin to seep into my being.
The question that haunts me: what do I spend time thinking about and how do my actions reflect this? If I spend time scrolling through feeds of beach bodies and adventure travel all day, am I building my capacity to take healthful action to help myself and others? Or am I comparing where I am to everyone else, disappointed by the ways in which I fall short? Every moment spent in meaningless comparison or considering fake and sensationalized news, are steps taken towards a mindset ruled by misery, slothfulness, and self-denigration.
I want to treat my mental landscape as sacred ground. Focusing my attention and time as often as I can to subjects of importance and pruning everything else. Building my intellect, skills, and my health not only to pursue my purpose: but to influence the world around me beneficially.
We all need the ability to critically assess issues, to question everything that is set before us. We need the capacity to seek and find objective truth-- because truth is a revelation, not only of how to live but why we should in the first place. Yet remaining distracted, gorging ourselves on social media and misinformation, endangers this.
