RE: ADSactly Tech News - Will Solar Power Become the Dominant Power Source on Planet Earth Someday?

in #solar7 years ago

I've got mixed feelings on solar energy in general. Let's see if I can be concise, though...
Pros:

  • low operation cost: basically free energy once setup
  • passive energy: almost no operation required other than intermittent maintenance(shoveling snow, cleaning surface, and repairs)
  • self contained: Can provide adequate or auxiliary power to otherwise hard to power individual systems(highly mobile systems, lights on signs in middle of nowhere, remote buildings, etc.)

Cons:

  • unreliable: produce no energy at night, reduced energy in inclement weather or in low sunlight areas
  • high initial investment: takes expensive materials to produce as it is a relatively new technology
  • non-competitive: other energy production methods exist that are far more potent and affordable

Like any energy production method, there is a place for it, but applying it everywhere might be counterproductive. I think it's fantastic in some instances, but I don't see it producing enough to justify getting most of our power from it except maybe in the distant future.
