55 Cancri E also known as Janssen is an exoplanet, that’s double the size of Earth. While it’s mass is 8.63 of Earth, making the planet a super-Earth. It was first discovered on the 30th August 2004. In 2010 it was calculated that 55Cancri E, takes 18 hours to orbit its star. We know quite a bit about this planet; it was the first super-Earth exoplanet to have its atmosphere, successfully analysed. The Hubble telescope detected hydrogen and helium, it also suggested there might be hydrogen cyanide. It was also thought it might contain nitrogen, water and oxygen making it more like Earth than we first thought.
There’s no chance for life as we know it, as its orbits very close to its star; 25 times closer than Mercury is to our sun. The hot side of this tidally locked planet temperature is 2,300°C (4,200 °F), while the colder side is around 1,400 °C (2,600 °F).
What really makes this planet interesting is that it’s mostly made up of carbon. This has gained it the nickname of the Diamond Planet. This planet would be worth $26.9 nonillion, that is 26.9 followed by 29, zeros. So the number looks like this $269,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. The estimate value of Earth GDP is thought to be $78 trillion (78 followed by 12 zeros). So in comparison Earths resources is nothing compared to one resource on this planet.
Diamonds are so common on 55 Cancri E, it wouldn’t be that expensive there. As strange as this sounds, diamonds aren’t rare in space. I do wonder if asteroid mining becomes normal and affordable, would we see the price of some materials fall. Of course this is a long time from now. Only more time and research will answer that question.
