I don't agree with everything here... don't get me wrong the article is good indeed but let me give you an example. I'm originally born Croatian and proud of my home country, grew up in Germany and spent almost all my life there so I speak both languages fluently but still don't feel accepted or as part of the culture in Germany. As I moved to Australia about a year and a half ago I also learned English (so I'm not a native speaker), but felt at home there straight away. Why? I guess that I saw parallels between the ozzy lifestyle and my personal interests such as hobbies for example.
To cut a long story short: In my opinion it's very important to learn the common language of the country you're living in, but it's not a barrier to be part of the culture if you're not a native speaker.
