The Merida Cable Car:
The Merida Cable Car has the distinction of being the highest in the World at 15,633 ft. 4.765m), as well as being the longest serial tram (7,77 miles). Is spans the magnificent national park area called the "Sierra Nevada" and connects Merida with the surrounding heights.
The system was constructed between 1.957 and 1.960 and is made up of four independent sections, aech one connected by a station. The ascent takes one hour; if you choose to go straight to the top.
First Section:
From Barinitas station (5,177 ft.) To La Montaña station (8,014 ft).
The car leaves the first station from 25th street (calle 25) in Merida and crosses the Chama River Canyon raising you to wonderful view of Merida and the nearby towns of la Parroquia and Ejido to the west and Tabay to the east.
It arrives at La Montaña station in 12 minutes.
Second Section:
From La Montaña statin (8,014 ft) to La Aguada station (11,327 ft)
The car enters the mervelous tranquility of the Majestic Andes. The transdition from the high tropical cloud forest to the zone above the tree line is where the "Paramo" Begins.
To the right you can see the steep walks of "El Toro" peak (15.640 ft.) This ascent takes 12 minutos.
Third Section:
From La Aguada station (11,327 ft) to Loma Redonda station (13,272 ft)
The third part of the ascent is through hihg country where the South American flannel flower or "Frailejón" grown. If the weather is clear, good photographs of tre venezuela's highest peak, the snow-capped "Pico Bolívar" (16,427 ft), may be taken.
To the east "La Concha" glaciar at 16,378 ft. This ascent 10 minutes.
Fourth Section:
From Loma Redonda station (13,272 ft) to Pico Espejo station (15,633 ft)
The car moves over steep rock faces and enchanting lakes. From the cable car you can see the two lagoons called "Los Anteojos". there are no towers between the last two stations and the ascent takes 14 minutes.
At the summint stands the statue of "La Virgen de las Nieves". A panoramic view of the twin peaks of respectively and the Timoncitos glacier on the southern slope of Pico Bolivar can all be senn. This ascent takes 14 minutes.
