Ya casi estoy en la “recta final”. Siento que fue ayer cuando entré a esa primera clase de química, llena de sueños, miedos y, sinceramente, pocas expectativas. Hoy puedo decir con certeza que ha valido la pena. No solo he crecido profesionalmente, sino también personalmente. Definitivamente no soy la misma persona que inició este camino.
In the home stretch
I am almost in the "home stretch". I feel like it was just yesterday when I walked into that first chemistry class, full of dreams, fears and, honestly, low expectations. Today I can say with certainty that it has been worth it. Not only have I grown professionally, but also personally. I am definitely not the same person who started this journey.
Recientemente, tuve la oportunidad de realizar mis prácticas en dos realidades completamente diferentes, lo que me llevó a reflexionar sobre lo que llamo “las dos Venezuelas”.
Por un lado, estuve en una pasantía “metropolitana”, en un laboratorio de referencia donde todo estaba al alcance: equipos modernos, pruebas de alta complejidad y un control de calidad impecable. En ese lugar, vi personas con recursos, para quienes el dinero no era un obstáculo. Algunos simplemente venían para los chequeos anuales, impecablemente vestidos, mientras que otros, a pesar de padecer enfermedades complejas, pudieron tener acceso a todos los exámenes necesarios.
Recently, I had the opportunity to do my internship in two completely different realities, which led me to reflect on what I call "the two Venezuelas".
On the one hand, I was in a "metropolitan" internship, in a reference laboratory where everything was within reach: modern equipment, highly complex tests and impeccable quality control. There, I saw people with resources, for whom money was not an obstacle. Some simply came for annual check-ups, impeccably dressed, while others, despite suffering from complex diseases, were able to have access to all the necessary tests.
Por otro lado, hoy, tuve la experiencia de trabajar en una zona que la universidad considera “rural”, en un ambulatorio de la capital. Allí veo la otra cara de la moneda: personas mayores cuyas pensiones no alcanzan para pagar una atención médica de calidad, niños con casos críticos y urgencias en las que los médicos hacen milagros con recursos limitados. Es inevitable que el corazón se ablande al ver estas situaciones. Uno quiere hacer más, ayudar más, pero los recursos son insuficientes.
On the other hand, today, I had the experience of working in an area that the university considers "rural", in an outpatient clinic in the capital. There I see the other side of the coin: elderly people whose pensions are not enough to pay for quality medical care, children with critical cases and emergencies where doctors perform miracles with limited resources. It is inevitable that one's heart is softened when one sees these situations. One wants to do more, to help more, but resources are insufficient.

Sé que muchos dirán que esto pasa en otros países, pero la realidad aquí va más allá: la infraestructura del lugar, los pacientes teniendo que comprar sus propios insumos, la lucha diaria por sobrevivir. Es una realidad difícil de explicar con palabras.
I know that many will say that this happens in other countries, but the reality here goes beyond that: the infrastructure of the place, the patients having to buy their own supplies, the daily struggle to survive. It is a reality difficult to explain with words.

A pesar de todo, mi día fue favorable. Me gustó mucho el ambiente de trabajo en la clínica. Aunque los exámenes que se realizan son pocos, es admirable el esfuerzo del equipo por brindar resultados que reflejen el estado de salud del paciente.
All in all, my day went well. I really liked the working environment at the clinic. Although the tests performed are few, the team's effort to provide results that reflect the patient's health status is admirable.
Hoy, frente al microscopio, encontré quistes de Giardia duodenalis en una niña de 6 años. Me rompió el corazón, porque detrás de esos quistes hay una historia: severos problemas intestinales y, probablemente, una calidad de vida afectada por lo que consume.
Today, in front of the microscope, I found Giardia duodenalis cysts in a 6 year old girl. It broke my heart, because behind those cysts there is a story: severe intestinal problems and, probably, a quality of life affected by what she consumes.
Esta experiencia me hace reflexionar no solo sobre la importancia de mi profesión, sino sobre cuánto falta hacer aún para cerrar esa brecha entre las dos realidades de nuestro país.
This experience makes me reflect not only on the importance of my profession, but also on how much still needs to be done to close the gap between the two realities of our country.
Gracias por acompañarme en este viaje. A veces compartir estas experiencias me ayuda a procesarlas y reafirmar que, aunque los desafíos son grandes, cada paso cuenta.

My first lab that i worked in an intership was with protozoans! There was a group that worked with giardia , I was working with Leishmania sp. it is a different world with cells thay are very similar to ours different from bacterias , so medicines are more easy to fail !! Very cool pics specially from the giardia’s cyst!!
