There's an important component to the free speech debate that it seems that most people don't grasp.

Yes, I do believe in absolute, unfettered, unhinged, complete free speech. I would go further than the First Amendment.

When I say that, people think that they got me on issues like threats and incitement.

No, you don't. I absolutely believe that no collection of words spoken or written in any order should land anyone in legal trouble just for speaking.

Should I be thrown in jail for saying, "I'll give you $500,000 to kill my wife."? Of course not.

Should Michael Douglas be in prison for saying that in A Perfect Murder? Of course not. Even though he probably had the money and had the wife, he was reciting lines in a movie. If a rich, married guy was caught making a serious offer to a person to kill his wife, that person goes to jail. That person doesn't go to jail for speech but for the conspiracy. Speech is a component in the conspiracy; but, the speech itself isn't a crime.

No collection of sounds in any order should ever be illegal. No speech should ever be illegal. What should bring punishment is conspiracy, incitement, and harassment which use speech as a tool. Not the speech itself.
