Just behind my house is a very beautiful temple of Lord Shiva, the temple is called as Babulnath temple which is named after the founder of the Shiv Ling in this area in the 1700s and then the road on which the temple is there is also called Babulnath Road. This is also the place where I live, I always feel very blessed to be staying in this place and so close to this temple. The temple is just behind my home and every prayer that happens in this temple can be heard in my home. The prayers are loud at certain times of the day, which is called the Aarti time, during this time they ring the bells and chant the holy Mantras, and I can feel all of that sitting in my home, and it all comes like a blessing.
People visit from far off places to visit the temple as there is lot of faith about it. I too visit it very often. During Maha Shivaratri which is a day that honors Lord Shiva there is mad rush, without any exaggeration I can say that there must be a minimum of 50K people visiting this temple on this day or even more. It takes anywhere between 4 to 5 hours to get to the temple as the line is so huge. There is systematic arrangement made for the entrance but the wait is inevitable. For many years I did visit on this day and I would go at 4 a.m. in the morning and still would only finish by 8 a.m. People start coming in from previous night itself.
This is one of the oldest temple in Mumbai city. A carpenter by the name of Babul discovered a Shiv Ling in this place in the 1780 and then this temple was made. This Shiv ling originally was consecrated by a Hindu king Bhimdev in the 12th century but then over time it got buried and then in the 18th century discovered by this person. This temple is made on a hill and it stands out tall and beautiful.
A Shiv Ling has a lot of spiritual significance and the main one is the union of masculine and feminine energies. It is also a symbol of creation, regeneration, and the cosmic balance that is essential for these processes. It is believed that milk should be offered at the Shiv Ling as a offering to Lord Shiva, but now that's been creating lot of controversy as gallons of milk goes to drain as offerings. Many temples have stopped this, which personally I also feel it's good. 15 years back when I would visit this temple I would see so much of milk going to drain in the name of offerings and would really feel sad about it, because in my Country there are so many people who struggle for one time meal and over there such a wastage is criminal. Now at the temple there is no more milk offering, and if one desires they can offer water and flowers.
Yesterday I visited the Temple in the evening, it was so peaceful and serene up there. Thankfully it was not crowded so I had a peaceful time doing prayers, else when there is rush they make you move out faster from the temple and you can barely pray in peace.
Photography is not allowed inside the Temple, I clicked some pictures from the outside.
This is the entrance of the Temple. It has some very beautiful carvings on it, as you can see the pillars and the arch's.
All of these old temples are classic pieces of art.
So magnificent
A little glimpse of the inside of the temple which is all in gold color.
When I visit the Temple I do not take anything, not only this but any temple. Because when I see even the other offerings like flowers and coconuts how it just goes into trash in no matter of time, I feel very sad. I do not believe that God needs any of this. Going with empty hands, offering prayers and seeking blessings is what I believe in.
