Time is an illusion. It is a construct of the mind to make a cohesive narrative that we typically understand as “the self.” What else could there be but the instance we call now? Is there ever a moment where are are actually experiencing the past or the future? No: now is all that exists. We may implant our memories of the past and our projections of the future onto this moment, but this simply results in a lack of awareness of what actually is.
All negativity is caused by the denial of the present. When we remove ourselves from the now by focusing on the future, we create fear, anxiety, unease, worry, and stress. When we travel back to the past in our minds, we create guilt, regret, resentment and sadness. It is in the liberated state of being tuned to the present moment that we find the salvation promised in many spiritual teachings.
A lot of people have a difficult time believing there exists a state of consciousness free from all negativity. These people are conditioned by a culture that accepts suffering as expected, even necessary. Because this viewpoint is so common, many come to believe the suffering they experience is caused by specific situations in life. They do not recognize that time is the cause of this suffering.
It is a common belief that by pushing the Sisyphysian boulder high enough, their problems will disappear. Those that do reach such a state of material wealth often find only misery awaits at that peak. This is because problems are interchangeable. If a person does not develop a sense of presence and quell the desires of the ego, then they will perpetually want and suffer. The ego is a bottomless pit. It can never be satisfied because it always wants something from the past or something in the future.
We can never reach a point where we are completely free of our problems. This is because there is no point to reach: we are at the only point there is. There is no salvation to be found in time. We cannot return to the past, and we cannot be free in the future. Presence is the key, and we can only unlock that door now.
