I'd been thinking that resistance represents the conflict that occurs when what you say you want is contradicting what you really want. In a lot of ways, your definition agrees with this. In a specific case, sometimes one's ego-driven demands aka "goals" are really in disagreement with what what someone truly desires -- and, as you point out, the ego-driven demands put an emphasis on proving that one is special and unique (ie, overachiever with the most, the biggest, etc).
