Discovering Abilities XLIII: Thorns

We are beginning to see the end of the Discovering Abilities series. This week we come to analysis number 43 with the Thorns skill, one of the most common skills and the one that most conditions our strategies in the Splinterlands universe. This week's analysis will be a bit different as I'm not going to use a specific card, but a global strategy with Venari Wavesmith. Let's start.

Empezamos a ver ya el final de la serie Discovering Abilities. Y es que esta semana llegamos al análisis número 43 con la habilidad Thorns. Una de las habilidades más comunes y que más condicionan nuestras estrategias en el universo Splinterlands. Esta semana el análisis será un poco diferente ya que no voy a utilizar una carta concreta, si no una estrategia global con Venari Wavesmith. Comenzamos.

The basis of the strategy I'm going to use to exploit and counter the Thorns ability is going to have Venari Wavesmith as the main protagonist. His Protect ability is going to penalise my opponent's melee attacks in a very important way. Thorns punishes melee attacks with damage regardless of health or shield damage Surrounding Venari Wavesmith with a powerful water deck lineup will do the rest of the job.

La base de la estrategia que voy a utilizar para aprovechar y contrarrestar la habilidad Thorns va a tener como principal protagonista a Venari Wavesmith. Y es que su habilidad Protect va a penalizar de manera muy importante los ataques cuerpo a cuerpo que utilice mi rival. Y es que Thorns castiga con daño los ataques cuerpo a cuerpo independientemente de si daña salud o escudo. Rodear a Venari Wavesmith de una poderosa alineación del mazo de agua va a hacer el resto del trabajo.

As I explain in the introduction, Thorns is a very common and widely used ability even in the lowest leagues of the game, and no less than 41 cards have this powerful ability. But you probably know this ability from the only summoner that provides it: Mylor Crawling. I'm sure you've either used it or suffered from it in many a fight.

Como explico en la introducción, Thorns es una habilidad muy común y muy utilizada incluso en las ligas más bajas del juego. Y es que nada menos que la friolera de 41 cartas cuentan con esta poderosa habilidad. Aunque es bastante probable que conozcas esta habilidad por el único invocador que la aporta: Mylor Crawling. Y es que estoy seguro que o bien lo has utilizado o bien lo has sufrido en muchos combates.

The gameplay Thorns brings to the game is passive damage, i.e. it damages the opponent when our card with Thorns receives an attack. Thorns deals two points of damage to the melee card that deals damage to the vitality or shield of one of our cards with this ability. This is why a summoner like Mylor Crawling has always been so important, and why the Chaos Legion edition has boosted the magic attack of this deck to prevent the green deck from becoming a melee specialisation.

La jugabilidad que aporta Thorns es la de daño pasivo, es decir, daña al rival cuando nuestra carta con Thorns recibe un ataque. Y es que Thorns causa dos puntos de daño a la carta con ataque cuerpo a cuerpo que daña, a la vitalidad o al escudo, de alguna de nuestras cartas con esta habilidad. Es por ello la importancia que ha tenido siempre un invocador como Mylor Crawling y el motivo por el que la edición Chaos Legion ha potenciado el ataque mágico de este mazo para evitar que el mazo verde se convirtiera en una especialización del ataque cuerpo a cuerpo.

My strategy with this analysis is to take advantage of Thorns being a battle condition to boost the shield in my lineup with Venari Wavesmith and a bunch of cards with magic attack and ranged attack surrounding Venari Wavesmith plus the point defence of a summoner like Kelya Frendul. Let's see how this strategy plays out.

La estrategia que planteo con este análisis es la de aprovechar que Thorns es una condición de batalla para potenciar el escudo de mi alineación con Venari Wavesmith y un buen puñado de cartas con ataque mágico y ataque a distancia rodeando a Venari Wavesmith además del punto de defensa que aporta una invocadora como Kelya Frendul. Vamos a ver qué resultado da esta estrategia.

For this battle my opponent has decided to go for a life deck line-up with Doctor Sloan and his ranged attack bonus. However, he used too many cards with melee attack and too few with ranged attack, which undermined the importance of the chosen summoner, so my deck performed perfectly and gave me an important victory for my clan in this brawl battle.

Para afrontar esta batalla mi rival se ha decidido por una alineación del mazo de vida con Doctor Sloan y su bonus de ataque a distancia. Sin embargo, ha utilizado demasiadas cartas con ataque cuerpo y pocas con ataque a distancia mermando la importancia del invocador elegido. Ante esta alineación mi mazo cumplió a la perfección y me otorgó una importante victoria para mi clan en esta batalla perteneciente a una brawl.

Thorns is undoubtedly one of the most powerful abilities in the game. Whether with Mylor Crawling or as a battle condition, the presence of Thorns has a major impact on the strategy you use and, by extension, the choice of cards that make up your line-up It's an ability that forces you to almost completely dispense with melee attacks and focus more on magic attacks or, with the typical problems, ranged attacks. A 9 out of 10 for Thorns and its powerful gameplay.

Thorns es, sin duda, una de las habilidades más poderosas del juego. Bien sea con Mylor Crawling o como condición de batalla, la presencia de Thorns condiciona de manera importante la estrategia a utilizar y, por extensión, la elección de las cartas que formarán nuestra alineación. Es una habilidad que no obliga a prescindir casi por completo del ataque cuerpo a cuerpo y potenciar especialmente el ataque mágico o, con los problemas típicos, el ataque a distancia. Nota de 9 sobre 10 para Thorns y su poderosa jugabilidad.
