All Out Close Range Battle with Zyriel

This post was made as entry for Splinterlands Social Media Challenge.

Have you ever wanted to use ranged units in the front position? What happens when ranged attackers gets in the front? How would you change your lineup if ranged units could attack from anywhere?

Close Range is a great rule set for those who love strategies with a lot of range attacks. It covers the weakness for ranged units that normally can’t attack from the first spot, allowing for more aggressive and flexible strategies. This rule gives players the freedom to unleash full firepower even from the frontline making it especially useful in battles with powerful ranged monsters like Zyriel's and the ones she gives Weapons Training to.

This Week's Theme is…

Ranged attacks may be used in the first position in battles.

Close Range gives teams ability with the same name turning them into more viable front line threats. While there are only a few good lineups with this rule set, they still give you options to use those units that normally can't be your front line.

Battle Factors

Mana: 52
Active Elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Life, Death, Dragon

|| All units have the Amplify ability.
  • This also not help a lot unless the enemies would be using melee sneaks and will miss their attacks on Riftwing.
  • || All Monsters have the Enrage ability.
  • Gives the team better speed and melee damage but since the team doesn't have a lot of melee units or have needs with speed, this isn't as important as Close Range.
  • || Ranged attacks may be used in the first position in battles.
  • Gives Zyriel, Riftwing and Grimbardun Smith an option to attack as a front line if needed.

Battle Strat: Use a solid two layer tank with Tusk the Wide and Usut, then have multiple high damage units at the back with Weapons Training coming from Zyriel and Skok Duskblight. The strategy is just a front to back team without any shenanigans. Through brute force, break through from the front up to the last.

Battle Summary: The battle could've been better. The low speed for my units made a lot of them miss their range attacks. With the help of mixed range and magic attacks, I still triumphed over them giving me the win in the end despite the problems with the missing range attacks.

    Lineup and Strategy

    || All friendly Monsters have +1 Melee damage.
    || All friendly Monsters have +1 Magic damage.

Why pick this summoner: Strongest summoner in the game. Not only you can use both fire and death elements and combine them into one team, he also has powerful abilities he can share with your units.

    || Reduced damage from Magic attacks by 50%.
    || Gives all friendly Units +1 Melee attack.

Why pick this unit: He's my usual go to tank for fire. I tried a lot of them but the high health and Void is still best even if he dies most of the time.

    || Has a 25% bonus chance of evading Melee or Ranged attacks from Units who do not have the flying ability.
    || Every time this Unit defeats an opponent, it gets +1 to all stats.
    || Does double damage when attacking an enemy that has no attacks or weapons training.
    || Restores a third of the max health to this Unit's health each round.
Why pick this unit: Still my best unit. The Life Leech from Lorkus combined with his high damage and Heal is always a solid combination. I often use him as a second tank if Tusk the Wide dies.

    || Adjacent units with no attack gain thisi unit's attack, up to a maximum of 3.
    || This Unit does double damage to targets with the Taunt ability.
    || When a friendly Unit dies it is brought back to life with 1 Health. This ability can only trigger once per battle.

Why pick this unit: An expensive unit with good abilities. The bonus magic attacks from Weapons Training is a huge advantage to any team.

    || This Unit is immune to negative status effects.
    || Reduced damage from Magic attacks by 50%.
    || Reduced damage from Melee and Ranged attacks by 50%.
    || Restores a third of max armor to the friendly Unit whose armor has taken the most damage.
Why pick this unit: A really strong unit based on his abilities. He is between two Weapons Training unit giving him a mix of Range and Magic attacks. The low speed messes with the range attacks though making him miss a lot of attacks.

    || Adjacent units with no attack gain thisi unit's attack, up to a maximum of 3.
    || Unit's health increases each time it damages an enemy Unit's health by half the damage dealt.
    || The first time the Unit takes damage it is ignored.
    || Reduces the Armor of all enemy Units by 2.
Why pick this unit: Really strong unit with Weapons Training and Life Leech. The Rust is also a good addition as It removes or reduce enemy armor that can block your range attacks.

    || Has a 25% bonus chance of evading Melee or Ranged attacks from Units who do not have the flying ability.
    || Gains 1 max health each time any Unit dies.
    || If an enemy misses this Unit with an attack, the attacker takes 2 damage.
    || Reduces the Ranged attack of all enemy Units by 1.
Why pick this unit: High speed unit with multiple abilities that you can use against melee and range units. He's a good unit to combine and partner with a Weapons Training for the attack.

    Summary

This lineup is a mix of heavy hitters between range and magic attack units. Lorkus enhances melee and magic damage making your offensive units stronger. The Close Range rule set will allow Zyriel and his trained units to attack from the frontline while Skok Duskblight adds more damage to this. The only issue I had with this team is that Grimbardun Smith's low speed made Zyriel's range attack a lot less efficient and should put a unit with higher speed like Riftwing in the middle of Skok Duskblight and Zyriel instead of Grimbardun Smith.
